The giant of a video game release is nearly upon us, and Sony is embracing it with GTA 6 PS5 controller pre-orders on two very cool-looking DualSense variations.

Two new limited-edition GTA 6 PS5 controllers are up for grabs now: one black, one white. Both share a lot of the same design sensibilities and features, but both are unmistakably 'Vice City' in style, with palm tree emblems and fronds draped over the pad, pink glints that shine through wonderfully, and a shimmering finish on both that does a great job of evoking neon lights.

These DualSense controllers will cost you $84.99 / £74.99 and will release alongside GTA 6 on November 19. However, there will be a slight variation in availability. The white GTA 6 DualSense will be "available in limited quantities globally at direct.playstation.com and at participating retailers", says Sony, while the black GTA 6 DualSense will be "available in limited quantities exclusively through direct.playstation.com where available" — so that means in the UK and US.

Almost all pre-order listings are now live on both sides of the Atlantic, and we're starting to see both variants sell out at some retailers. We're still waiting for some to drop the controller in the US and UK, though, so more should be available soon. And there could potentially be restocks before launch, too.

Should you pre-order a GTA 6 Limited Edition PS5 controller?

This is perhaps an even easier recommendation to make than the one I did before the game was available to pre-order: in short, you should absolutely, 100%, definitely consider placing a pre-order on these GTA 6 DualSense controllers if you can, rather than waiting and hoping they remain available in the long run.

These are accessories — that will be available in "limited quantities", according to Sony — that will coincide with the release of the biggest thing in all of entertainment ever. As a result, the demand will likely be the highest on DualSense controller editions we've ever seen — and perhaps on any accessory ever.

Yes, there are two different editions which will hopefully spread the load of the demand, but I think placing a pre-order if you can is by far the safest option if you're at all interested in one of these PS5 controllers.

There's no denying they do look pretty slick.

Amazon US now has the controller

Finally joining us is Amazon US, where the White GTA 6 DualSense is available for pre-order.

So, what's the current situation?

Here's where we're at right now with GTA 6 DualSense controller stock in the US and the UK. Any strikethroughs represent places that are currently out of stock, though more controllers could appear at any time, so they're worth checking if you're still on the hunt.

The big news is that the White variant is almost completely sold out in the UK, with only EE currently stocking it. The Black version, which is exclusively available at PS Direct, remains available right now.

Over in the US, the White controller is starting to sell out as well, with Best Buy and Target already both out of stock. I suspect other retailers will follow soon, but availability is still strong at the official PS Direct Store.

Despite all of this, we're still waiting to see the DualSense at Amazon in the UK. That could be a good opportunity to snag one if you haven't yet, as the mega-retailer should get quite a large allocation.

Now we've got a moment to pause, I'm going to have a check through all retailers and make sure everything is up-to-date in terms of availability and stock levels. I have a feeling controllers are now sold out at some retailers, so will ensure those with stock (or are still expected to have the controller soon) are nearer the top.

Walmart is the next US retailer to join in with the pre-order fun.

If you're stuck in a super-long queue at the PS Direct Store, you might be able to go to the link below. Scroll down until you see the controllers, as in the image above, and then add either controller to your basket from here. This should mean you don't need to wait to get onto the proper listing page. Be sure you're signed in first, too.

No sign of the controllers at any other retailers just yet, but I've still got an eye on Amazon and Walmart. The good news is that there's loads of availability still at PS Direct, Best Buy and GameStop.

On my latest refresh, I've managed to reach the pages for both controllers at the PS Direct Store. Both are listed as currently unavailable, but buy buttons should be going live soon. Once again, here are the all-important links.

30 mins to go for the US

With 30 minutes to go in the US before the controllers should drop, I just wanted to quicky share the key links to the PS Direct Store. If you go to them now you'll see an error message, but these should go live once the controller becomes available.

It's worth sitting on the page now as Sony will likely implement a queue system like they did in the UK for the launch, which took some of us over an hour to get through.

Yep, we've seen the Target listing

For any US folks just joining us, yep, we've seen that a listing for the White controller is already live at Target. It currently says it's sold out, and it's been that way since we first spotted it about five hours ago.

I'm not sure if the controller went on sale in the early hours and stock has been snapped up already, but I'd be more inclinded to believe that Target is just waiting to activate the buy button when pre-orders should officially open at 10am ET. Either way, it'll be one to keep an eye on.

I've just seen that link is more important that I realised, as the white version of the controller has sold out at every other retailer in the UK. I didn't expect that to happen so soon, and definitely not before the PS Direct-exclusive Black model. Get in there quick if you've been trying to find the White one.

It's just popped up at EE

While we're waiting for the US drop to happen, here's a quick heads-up for those in the UK: the controller is now available at EE if you'd prefer to shop there. Still no sign of it on Amazon.

And we're back. We're refuelled and ready for more GTA 6 controller preorder chaos, which should all kick off in one hour at 10am ET. Let's hope the situation at the PS Direct store with the exclusive Black edition is a little better than the mess in the UK this morning.

We've already received hundreds of votes in our poll, with the largest share (40%) of those from users who have secured the black DualSense.

A hefty portion of you (37%) are still waiting in the PS Direct queue, though.

Finally, 23% of voters say they got the white controller — which definitely seems like the less sought-after model!

Right, after the chaos of the last hour, let's take a moment to catch our breath and see the current state of play. The good news that the limited edition Black version of the GTA 6 controller is still available at PS Direct. The White version is widely available at several retailers as well. Your chances of securing one are good!

Finally! We've managed to lock a unit down. It took refreshing the page entirely and waiting in the queue, but it looks like there's still stock about.

It's still a mess on our end. We've got tabs open on a few machines are two are still stuck in the waiting room... and the one that's got through to the checkout isn't actually able to pay!

I'm refreshing the official PlayStation Direct store like mad and I'm not seeing anything yet. Come on, Sony, where are you?

The current state of play

With PS Direct set to go live in a matter of minutes. Here's the state of play in the UK right now, with all the retailers that currently have the controller available to preorder. Remember, this is only the white version, though. The Black edition is exclusive to PS Direct and should be available at 10am.

15 mins to go for PS Direct

Just a heads up that there are less than 15 minutes to go before the GTA 6 controller drop at PlayStation Direct. This is the only place where you can get the Black version of the controller, and it will likely sell out quick. We'll get you the links to buy as soon as possible!

Um, has Target already sold out in the US?

Given most UK stock has already dropped, and given there might be a few US-based night owls hoping to scoop a controller preorder early, I did a quick look around US retailers and spotted something strange. Target may have already put the controller up for sale...and it's already sold out?

Now, it may be that they've just got the listing page live and will activate the preorder button at 10am EST, because if they've already sold out, that would be a bit ridiculous. Either way, if you're in the US, this is one to keep an eye on already.

Smyths Toys gets involved

Yep, Smyths Toys is dropping the GTA 6 controller too, as one eagle-eyed commenter spotted as well. Initially, it was only available to preorder for click and collect, so this might be a good option if you want to avoid delivery, but the delivery option is now available too.

Hello! James Pickard checking in for my shift of controller hunting. I wasn't very surprised to see a bunch of retailers drop the controller early, as more and more seem to be ignoring the 10am start time recently. Speaking of that, I've just spotted another one live...

And after that initial flurry of activity, it seems like things are slowing down for a few moments.

As predicted, one retailer is jumping the gun a bit with Very putting its listings up a full hour and 15 minutes ahead of schedule.

Which version of the pad are you looking at getting?

I personally think the white version is the best-looking of the two, as those pink buttons really pop against the more neutral color scheme.

That said, I can still see plenty of appeal in the black (which is the PS Direct exclusive model) — particularly if you already have an all-black console setup.

Nothing yet in the UK it seems, though I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for the remaining 1 hour and 40 minutes until the official pre-order time just in case!

I'm currently in a restaurant in Heathrow airport gathering up retailer links and snacking on a breakfast sandwich, for what it's worth. That's about as good as that story gets...

But regardless of where we or indeed you are reading this from, we'll have both sides of the Atlantic well and truly covered today, and with UK pre-orders opening in less than 4 hours, it's sneaking up on us already...

It's early in the UK, very early on the East Coast, and you might well still be up on the West Coast, but we're back and ready to get prepped for the GTA 6 PS5 controller pre-order build up ahead of stock dropping in a matter of hours!

Remember, the DualSense is compatible with PC as well

PC players will sadly have to wait a little while longer for GTA 6 to release on that platform, but that doesn't mean you have to miss out on the hype. The DualSense controller is fully compatible with PC via USB and Bluetooth, so if you feel like you want to be involved with the release in some way, one of these controllers is an option for you. Maybe you can play through GTA 5 with it and pretend it's the new game instead!

What about a special edition console for GTA 6?

I am somewhat surprised that Rockstar hasn't pushed things even further by launching a limited-edition PS5 or Xbox console to coincide with the launch of GTA 6. It feels like the natural thing to do.

We may all be in for a big surprise at some point over the next couple of months if one does surface, but it feels quite late for it to happen now. Instead, I'm sure there will be a few console bundles available with the game (and maybe featuring these controllers) when the launch comes around for folks buying hardware just for GTA 6.

What are the chances of a restock if you miss out?

Given the expected popularity of GTA 6 and these DualSense controllers, I feel like it's almost guaranteed that they will sell out in this first drop. That popularity, however, means that further restocks are very likely in the run-up (and after) launch.

Sony has been fairly regular when it comes to restocking other limited-edition controllers, and I don't think it will be any different with the GTA 6 models. Just be aware that the Black version is a PS Direct exclusive, so that one will be harder to get — even if there's a restock.

When does Amazon drop the GTA 6 controllers?

As one of the biggest and most popular places to shop online, there's always a lot of interest in when Amazon will make these controllers available to buy. Given its dominance, though, it rarely follows the expected plan announced by Sony.

Sure, it could follow suit and go live at 10am local time with everyone else, given it's such a significant launch, but the more likely scenario is that it just ignores everything and puts the controllers up whenever it feels like later in the day. It might even wait until tomorrow.

Because of that, it'll be one we'll be checking and refreshing regularly so that you don't miss the drop.

Where is stock likely to drop first?

Retailers are supposed to stick to the 10am local time embargo before launching preorders for these DualSense controllers, but as we've seen with previous drops, some decide to be a little cheeky and kick things off early.

The Wolverine controllers, for example, were available at both Target in the US and Currys in the UK a short time ahead of the announced launch time. We'll be watching both of them closely once again to see if they repeat themselves for this launch.

Given it's GTA 6, though, things might be a bit stricter this time when it comes to putting the controllers up for sale, so any early drops aren't guaranteed.

Our friends at GamesRadar+ have spotted a social media post that shows an image of the packaging — and even that looks slick as heck! If it's real, of course...

Which retailers are the ones to go for first?

If I'm understanding the PS Blog post correctly — and I think I am, I've done loads of these launches now, though Sony can be ambiguous — then I reckon you're best first port of call is going top be PlayStation Direct. And that's on both sides of the Atlantic.

US retailers have been pretty good on the last limited edition releases and all of Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and GameStop have reliably followed with stock. We'd still err toward the former three though for the best and likely-quickest shopping experience.

In the UK, things have been a bit different in recent times. Amazon UK has been very unreliable when it comes to limited edition PS5 hardware or accessory stock. For example, it still hasn't got Marvel's Wolverine DualSense stock. However, the likes of Smyths Toys, Currys,. and Very have all been reliable with the last release or two.

An early bit of advice to be in position, well, early

It sounds obvious, being ready early, but actually what I mean more specifically is that last time out with the Marvel's Wolverine PS5 collection of controllers and console covers, retailers in the UK, particularly, actually went live comfortably earlier than the 10am start time.

So much so, in fact,m that PS Direct itself also pulled the trigger before 10am in the end; such were the options available to customers before the official start time.

As a result, it'll definitely pay to be as ready to go as you possibly can earlier than 10am ET or 10am local time — perhaps aim for 9.30am and get poised.

And I also really like the look of the properly moulded and formed palm tree fronds that are raised off the surface of the DualSense.

A lot of previous designs haven't altered the physical feel of the PS5 controller that much, so I really like this change and feature of this particular limited edition design.

I really like the flashy details of the glinty art style in both the black and white variants, and this close up of the white model really shows how the glimmering and shimmering speckles will change in the light too. Nice.

OK, the first part of this is easy: GTA 6 PS5 controller pre-orders kick off at 10am ET in the US, and 10am local time everywhere else. Boom.

The second part, availability, is a little more complex, but only in the sense of the difference between the two variants. If my parsing of the PS Blog post is correct, it appears that the Black GTA 6 DualSense will be exclusive to PS Direct, while the white variant will be the one that's available at both PS Direct and other retailers.

In terms of what, there will be two distinct GTA 6 PS5 controllers up for pre-order tomorrow.

Sony is attractively naming them, officially, as 'DualSense Wireless Controller – Grand Theft Auto VI Black Limited Edition' and 'DualSense Wireless Controller – Grand Theft Auto VI White Limited Edition'. The black and white overarching colorway is indeed the biggest thing that separates them, but they both look slick as heck in my view.

There's that shimmering blue look on both, palm tree fronds and forms draped over the pads, and pink accents that punch through the black or white really pleasingly. I think I prefer the Black one, but it's a close run thing.

There's no difference in price, though, and both will cost you $84.99 / £74.99 — the standard price for DualSenses right now.

These are going to be hot stuff...

Not only are these two controllers absolute beauties — at least, I think — they are tied to the biggest entertainment release in history.

As a result, I predict the demand for these is going to be huge; absolutely wild, in fact. I know that recent Limited Edition PS5 controllers haven't sold out like some, but surely the safe bet here is that stock will fly.

Because of that I reckon it'll pay to get in position early with bookmarking the above links, getting account information in order, and making sure you're fully informed ahead of stock dropping. tomorrow.
