Automattic CEO and founder Matt Mullenweg has been placed on a paid leave of absence by the company's board, but while this is currently being seen as a temporary measure, Automattic has not publicly stated how long the leave will last.

The reason for the board's decision remains unclear, but TechCrunch reports that some employees were "ecstatic" or "relieved" at the decision.

However, Mullenweg is clearly unhappy with the decision, alleging that the board gave him 50 minutes' notice before the meeting and insufficient time to seek legal counsel.

Mullenweg remains a member of Automattic's board, but claimed in a company-wide Slack message seen by TechCrunch that CFO Mark Davies had "conspired" with board members Ann Dunwoody, Toni Schneider and Sue Decker to remove him temporarily. Mullenweg, a board member, voted against the change but was, of course, outvoted. Davies has been appointed interim CEO in the meantime.

"I won’t be able to make the [meeting] tomorrow. @Mark Davies has conspired with @Ann Dunwoody, @Toni, and @Sue Decker behind my back and they voted to put me on a paid leave of absence," he said.

"Matt remains the leader of the WordPress project and I remain Executive Director of WordPress. Our teams, priorities, and work continue as planned," WordPress.org executive director Mary Hubbard wrote. WordPress.com (an Automattic product) runs on WordPress.org.

While the reasons have not been publicly shared, Mullenweg hasn't been short of the odd high-profile incident in recent years. He accused WP Engine of profiting from the WordPress ecosystem, which resulted in WP Engine suing Automattic and Mullenweg.

He also offered insiders who disagreed with his direction an exit package worth either six months' pay or $30,000, mounting internal tensions.

"Matt Mullenweg is currently on leave from Automattic," a company spokesperson told us in a statement. "Mark Davies, Automattic’s CFO, will lead the company as interim CEO. The Board has full confidence in Mark's leadership and in the team's ability to execute against the company's priorities."

But the best part is that you can scale this setup as you grow, adding just what you need without a single cent wasted. Slow season? You can also scale those resources back down. Here's exactly how I would structure it.

Launching a website in a day with $13: What to expect

My stack works best for landing pages, portfolios, small business sites, and simple lead generation forms. You'll end up with a mobile-friendly site on your own domain, built without any coding skills by describing what you want in plain English.

There's always a trade-off with these setups, which is scale. You can't collect payments, running complex workflows will crash your website, and storage is limited if you want to host audiovisual content.

But if you structure it right, you can keep space to expand things later without having to go through an expensive migration to a premium platform. There's no vendor lock-in, your existing stack is designed for scalability, and you're not stuck with any one provider.

Does it really cost $13?

Yes, because you'll only have to pay for the domain and a small subscription fee if you want to access one of the better vibe coding or AI website builders.

A .com domain from a mainstream registrar runs somewhere between $5 and $15 for the first year, which covers the budget in this guide with room to spare.

There's no upcharge for connecting your domain, AI tools don't always bill you for every additional token, and there are no additional monthly charges for hosting or storage, etc.

• A vibe coding tool. Look for one that supports code sync and export to an external repository, even on the free plan.
• A free GitHub account with a new repository that has GitHub Pages enabled.
• A custom top-level domain, such as a .com or .org, which costs roughly $10 to $20 a year.
• A free Supabase account for handling logins and storing form submissions. This one is entirely optional.
• A free AI code editor, like Cursor or Claude Code, installed on your computer for minor tweaks and updates. Also optional.

Step-by-step instructions for launching a $13 website in one day

All of these steps take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour individually. Work through them in order, and you should have a live site well before dinner.

Step 1: Describe your site to a vibe coding tool

Open your chosen vibe coding platform and describe the site you want in plain language. Mention the type of business, the pages you need (home, about, contact, pricing), and any specific sections like a lead capture form or testimonials block.

Most tools generate a working preview within a minute or two. From there, refine it with follow-up prompts:

• Ask for changes to layout, color scheme, or copy one section at a time, rather than everything at once.
• Request a working contact or sign-up form early, since this is often the trickiest part to get right.
• Check the mobile preview, since most visitors will land on your site from a phone.

Remember that on most free tiers, vibe coding tools will limit the number of prompts you can enter in a day. So make sure to read up on these limits and be certain about what you want so you can describe it verbatim. Also mention that you'll be hosting the website using GitHub Pages in your prompt itself, so that the AI can structure the code to be Pages-compatible.

Step 2: Connect a GitHub repository

Once you're happy with the design, look for the option to sync or export your project to GitHub. Most vibe coding tools have a one-click GitHub connection built in. You can also just export the code as a ZIP file and upload the contents directly to GitHub.

Create a free GitHub account, then create a new repository for the project. Keep it public so you can enable GitHub Pages, because Pages hosting is free for public repositories but requires a Premium plan for private ones.

Step 3: Turn on GitHub Pages

In your repository, go to Settings, then Pages. Choose the branch your site should deploy from (usually main) and save your changes.

GitHub will generate a free web address in the format yourusername.github.io/repository-name. This confirms your site is live, even before you attach a custom domain.

Step 4: Buy your domain

Pick a domain registrar and search for the domain name you want. Prices vary depending on the extension you pick, so a .com will usually cost more than a less common option like .dev or .site.

Stick to a mainstream registrar with clear pricing and no surprise renewal jumps. Skip any add-ons you don't need, like a premium DNS, to keep your total below $10.

Step 5: Point your domain at GitHub Pages

Back in your GitHub repository's Pages settings, enter your custom domain in the relevant field. This creates a small configuration file in your repository that tells GitHub which domain to serve your site from.

Then, in your domain registrar's dashboard, add the DNS records GitHub provides. This usually means a few A records pointing to GitHub's servers, plus a CNAME record if you're using a "www" version of your domain. These changes can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to fully take effect.

Step 6: Set up Supabase (optional)

If your site needs to collect sign-ups, store bookings, or handle a login system, create a free Supabase project. Supabase gives you a hosted database along with authentication tools, without needing to manage a server yourself.

Most vibe coding tools have a direct Supabase integration, so you can usually connect your project with an API key rather than writing database code by hand. Ask your vibe coding tool to build the specific form or login flow you need. It will typically wire up the Supabase connection for you. When you connect or upload the files and code to GitHub, the integration will stay intact.

Step 7: Test everything before you call it done

Open your site on both desktop and mobile, and click through every link, button, and form. Submit a test entry through any lead capture form to confirm it actually reaches Supabase or your inbox.

Check that your custom domain loads correctly with https:// rather than throwing a security warning, since GitHub Pages issues free SSL certificates automatically once your DNS is set up correctly. Fix anything that looks off before sharing the link with anyone.

For small fixes, like a typo or a button that's misaligned, it's often faster to open the project in a free AI code editor like Cursor or Claude Code and make the change directly, rather than going back through your vibe coding tool's chat interface. Once you push the update to GitHub, your live site refreshes automatically.

What to do when you outgrow your $13 website

At some point, your free tiers will start to feel tight. Maybe you're approaching Supabase's storage or user limits, or your traffic has grown to the point where you want more control over performance and analytics.

The good news is that none of the upgrades below require you to rebuild your site from scratch. Because your code lives in a standard GitHub repository, you can move it to almost any hosting provider without losing your design or content.

• Upgrade your Supabase project to a paid tier once you're close to the free plan's storage, bandwidth, or user limits, rather than waiting until you hit a hard wall.
• Move hosting from GitHub Pages to a platform built for dynamic sites, such as Vercel or Netlify, if you need server-side features GitHub Pages doesn't support.
• Add a content delivery network in front of your site once traffic grows, so pages load quickly for visitors regardless of where they're located.
• Bring in a developer to review and harden any AI-generated code before it handles sensitive customer data, particularly around authentication and payments.
• Set up proper analytics and monitoring so you know when you're approaching a limit, instead of finding out when something breaks.

Low cost alternatives

The approach I have outlined above gives a great level of flexibility and scalability with a small upfront cost. However, there are other options out there if you are looking to create a website on a budget.

For example, you may pick an AI website builder and build your website entirely within that platform. This offers a simpler, all-in-one approach, although it can make it tricky to move your website elsewhere if you find it doesn't meet your needs in the future.

The company says taking this approach aims to shift AI’s involvement from generating a first version to setting up and operating the systems behind a project.

The new tool was launched following a noticeable change in what Hostinger customers are building, highlighting research which found a year ago fewer than 4% of projects created on its platform fell outside of the traditional website category. Ahrefs, one of the biggest digital marketing, SEO, and AEO platforms, has announced the launch of Letaido, its agent-powered marketing workspace.

According to a press release distributed by Ahrefs earlier this week, Letaido will benefit from native access to Ahrefs data, helping marketers and agencies automate content marketing, SEO, and marketing research without any need to manage custom integrations of APIs.

.com has long been established as the gold standard top-level domain (TLD). From Amazon and eBay to Google and Facebook, practically every online behemoth has been built on .com.

But with so much new technology flooding the market, could this all be about to change?

New research has claimed .com has lost its standing as the highest-priced web address in terms of average value – beaten by .ai.

The .ai boom

The report by Escrow.com found a record-high average value of .com domains of $529k, beating its previous cycle peak in 2021. Yet, despite its huge value, .ai still beat it, with an all-time high average value of $535k, marking a 260% surge in just three months.

This data reinforces a clear trend, with AI continuing to spread from the stock market into the TLD space and beyond.

The report also highlights a 270% increase in the volume of .ai domains, growing from $10.0 million to $37.7 million during the period. However, .com remains considerably higher by volume at an impressive $86 million.

"This quarter's .ai growth alone beat the combined gain of every other country-code extension. A year ago we didn't know if .ai would actually challenge .com or just fizzle out like the rest. Now we've got an answer. Buyers are paying more, on average, for a good .ai name than a good .com one," shared Matt Barrie, Chief Executive of Escrow.com.

With many AI-focused businesses entering the market, there is little surprise that there is growing demand for the .ai TLD. Startups and small businesses using it gain an immediately recognizable sign of who they are and what they do.

The risks of .ai

Picking a .ai domain isn’t without its risks - using .ai can make it hard to pivot. For example, if a startup launches its brand on a .ai domain, only to later pivot away from AI, the equivalent .com domain may not be available or may be incredibly expensive.

Brands also need to factor in that .ai isn’t a generic domain like .com, but is an official country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean.

According to some reports, .ai domain registrations have transformed Anguilla’s economy, which has primarily relied on tourism in the past. However, this reliance on a single local government can create uncertainty for .ai users, subjecting them to potential regulatory changes, geopolitical instability, and political shifts.

The expansion to Name.com’s API will allow users to search, purchase, and manage domains directly inside the tools they build with.

Name.com claims that AI has drastically lowered the barrier to building websites, apps, and online businesses, making it as simple as requesting what you want using plain-English prompts. The company notes how these new partnerships mark a shift in how software is being built and launched.

The importance of domains

Despite many traditional websites seeing fluctuations in traffic, a recent survey by Name.com reported that 77% of respondents expect domain importance to increase because of AI.

According to a press release shared with TechRadar Pro this week, Name.com believes that these latest integrations will help bring registration into the platform where creation happens, making digital identity an integral part of the building process right from the beginning.

"We’re at an inflection point where digital presence is being rebuilt from the ground up," said Sammy Ahmed, VP and General Manager at name.com. "Domains remain the foundation of online identity and presence, signaling trust and credibility that AI cannot replicate. These partnerships reflect growing demand for domain registration to happen directly within the tools people already use, and name.com is making that seamless."

The company also claims that in the first week of Lovable’s integration, thousands of domain registrations were made, showing a strong sign of demand.

“More people than ever are building digital products with tools like Lovable,” said Sebastian Schaaf, Product at Lovable. “Giving these products a home needed to be effortless for our users, and we decided that name.com was the right partner to make this possible at our scale."

The announcement builds on name.com’s list of existing partners and integrations, including Vercel, Replit, Netlify, Bolt, and Beacons.

Wix CEO Avishai Abrahami confirmed in an X post that the company will be laying off around 20% of its workers as a result of an ongoing restructuring initiative set to affect all departments.

Among the reasons cited for the mass layoffs were currency and exchange rate pressures, with many of the company's workers and a large portion of its operating costs housed in Israel, under the Israeli Shekel.

Conversely, a lot of company revenue is Dollar-dominated, which has created a significant gap in currency sustainability.

AI, streamlining and missed earnings

"In the past few quarters the exchange rate between the Shekel and the US dollar has shifted significantly," he said. "This creates a structural pressure on our ability to operate at our current scale."

Additionally, the CEO unsurprisingly blamed artificial intelligence for the shakeup. "We have witnessed the most significant shift in how companies are built since the invention of modern programming languages in the 1970s," the leader stated.

Abrahami explained that companies like Wix must 'rewire' how they operate, leading to major job cuts. But the leader didn't rule out future hires, noting the creation of new roles like Xengineer and Creators already.

He also become one of a growing number of business leaders to cite the need to flatten organizational hierarchy to streamline efficiency. He hopes a leaner will will enable faster decisions to be more agile to shifts in tech capabilities and customer trends.

Though the finer details are under wraps, affected workers are being promised "personally curated separation packages."

Company shares are down around 1.5% following the announcement, and worse still, down around 47.9% this year to date following a major first-quarter earnings miss where adjusted EPS stood at $0.68 compared with Wall Street forecasts of $1.22.

But, AI-generated websites are rarely ready for production without significant human intervention. When you generate an AI website, expect issues with:

• Poor SEO fundamentals
• Accessibility problems

How to edit AI-generated websites

Pay special attention to how your business is described. Make sure your unique value proposition comes through clearly on the homepage and key landing pages. AI generates designs based on your input, but the quality needs improving through manual refinement that reflects what makes your brand different.

3. Optimize technical SEO elements

Common issues include generic page titles with no keywords, missing meta descriptions, and poor heading structures where H1-H6 tags are misused. Write unique meta titles (50-60 characters) and descriptions (150-160 characters) for each important page, including keywords naturally.

Check that your heading hierarchy makes sense semantically, not just visually. Verify that image alt text is descriptive and helpful for both accessibility and search engines, rather than generic or missing entirely.

AI website building often includes elements that slow loading times. Run your site through performance testing tools and identify what's causing slowdowns. Most AI builders generate sites with oversized images that need compression.

Remove unnecessary scripts that don't serve your business goals. Configure browser caching properly and ensure your hosting can handle expected traffic without degradation.

AI website builders can speed up your workflow, but they require oversight

Most AI tools can generate something that looks like a website, but what separates useful tools from frustrating ones is whether they help you move forward after the first draft. AI excels at speed and creating starting points, but cannot replace strategic thinking and quality assurance for complex projects.

"AI is killing our traffic. What should we do?"

A question asked in most marketing meetings across the globe in recent months.

The future of website traffic may feel bleak, but a recent study by one of the best website builders, Duda, reveals a blueprint for survival: five website must-haves that could increase human traffic by 320% and boost conversions 2.7x.

According to the study, websites that are optimized for AI-crawlers recieve 320% more human traffic than those that aren't. It converts too, with 270% more form submissions, and 250% more click-to-call events.

The study covered more than 850,000 websites with 69M AI crawler visits, revealing 5 common themes amongst websites successfully driving human traffic from AI sources:

• Local schema
• GBP synchronization
• Dynamic pages
• Greater number of pages

With all the doom and gloom around website traffic at the moment, I was intrigued by these findings. So, I caught up with Oded Ouaknine, CRO at Duda, to get the inside scoop on why we are seeing these trends and how businesses can position themselves to benefit from them.

Many people believe that AI is reducing website traffic. Your study found that AI-crawled sites received 320% more human traffic. Why do you think this disconnect is happening? 

There’s not a complete disconnect. AI is reducing the amount of traffic websites are receiving overall.

While we see in our data that AI-crawled websites receive 320% more human traffic than those with less AI visibility, another way to read that would be that websites that aren’t visible to AI receive 320% less than those that are.

So while traffic is being impacted overall, we’re seeing that websites that appear in AI are navigating this transformation much better.

How does this traffic compare to that which was previously driven by search engines? Is it converting, or is it ‘low-intent’ window shopping?

One unique thing about AI search is that it seems to eliminate a lot of the “window shopping” aspect of organic traffic. Visitors are coming into the website far more informed than ever before.

In our data, analyzing over 850,000 sites, AI-crawled websites earned 2.7X more form submissions and 2.5X more click-to-call events. We see this in third-party research, too. A study by Microsoft Clarity saw similar numbers to ours, that AI traffic converts at 3X the rate of normal traffic.

The report notes a shift from local SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to local AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) as primary traffic sources for small businesses. What do you think is the driving force behind this shift? Is it a change in how Google works, or a change in how humans are asking questions?

It’s undoubtedly a change in how Google works. A study by Whitespark found that 68% of local searches now contain AI Overviews.

Local search, in particular, is a vitally important lead acquisition channel for SMBs, and we know that when an AI Overview appears in a search result, clicks drop significantly. These businesses must adapt so that they can continue appearing in front of their customers.

Do your findings highlight AI as becoming a gatekeeper to small businesses? If AI doesn’t like your site’s structure, does it hide you from potential customers? 

Absolutely. AI isn’t an endless list of links like traditional search; it’s a much narrower list of recommendations.

If I were to ask ChatGPT to help me find mechanics that specialize in hybrid vehicles in the Boulder, Colorado area, for example, businesses that offer these services but don’t specifically mention them on their website have no chance of appearing. No matter how many times you ask ChatGPT for more options.

SMBs need to ask themselves what questions their customers are asking, and make sure those answers exist on their websites if they want to be found.

Out of the five ‘must-haves’ you identify for local AEO, which do you consider the most important? How can businesses practically roll this out?

While I think all of the optimizations are worth implementing, expanding the number of website pages may be the most important.

Transforming your website into a deep well of knowledge for AI systems is the only way to appear as an answer for those more specific questions. However, this may come across as the most overwhelming recommendation, too. Thankfully, many modern website builders offer the ability to create website pages in bulk.

What the SMB needs to do is reflect on their customers and on the conversations they have with those customers. Questions like “What questions are we constantly being asked over the phone, or at the counter?” and “What are we known for in the community?” Then, compile the answers to those questions and leverage one of those bulk page generation tools to ensure the content appears online in a discoverable and structured way.

How can agencies be evolving services to better meet small business needs in 2026 and beyond? 

Agencies should prioritize developing a more consultative relationship with their clients.

An underlying story in this AEO study is that the impacts of AI, like AI search, are trickling down to SMBs. However, SMBs may not be reaping the benefits. Research we recently conducted with Siinda shows that SMBs feel comfortable using AI, but that this comfort is currently limited to only shallow tasks.

The most successful agencies will be those that can meet their clients where they are today, then educate and guide them toward what's next. As odd as that sounds, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has exploded in popularity in recent years. So much so that after 15 years of training, I have been able to start my own BJJ gym in a small town with just 10,000 residents, many of whom are at retirement age.

Most people told me this wouldn’t work. But after two years, we have built an incredible community and a growing student base.

I’ve achieved this entirely as a ‘side hustle’ by using Wix’s all-in-one business platform. It’s helped me automate essential communications, seamlessly manage my bookings, set up a no-fuss online store, and speed up money management tasks. However, some of its AI tools have lacked the personal touch required for a local business.

Below, I outline my challenges, successes, and failures when using Wix over the past two years.

Why I picked Wix

Before I launched Borderlands Grappling, I had already used Wix to build and host several websites for small projects and personal branding. However, I have since moved my main personal website to Hostinger.

As I run this business entirely in my spare time, Wix was a natural choice. Firstly, it was affordable, with plans starting at $17/mo. I self-funded the business and launched it on a shoestring budget. Once essentials like gym mats, insurance, and training were paid for, I didn’t want to spend a fortune on software before I had any evidence that it could be a success.

Wix neatly packaged almost every tool I needed into one platform. Not only did this save me money on multiple subscriptions, but it also made things more efficient – crucial for a time-poor business owner.

What I've used

Website builder and editor

Honestly, Wix’s array of website builders and editors is a little confusing. You can build using the Wix AI website builder if you want a super rapid result, or you can use Wix Harmony for more control. Alternatively, you can use Wix Studio if you are a website-building professional.

Not all of these options were available when I built my site, which simplified things. I picked a template and then used the Wix Editor to make it my own. If I wanted to follow the same process today, I would have to take the Wix Harmony option.

Frustratingly, if you want to use the tools offered by Wix Studio, you need to build the site in Wix Studio. This means that if I wanted more control now, I’d have to build my site from the ground up – no thanks.

That being said, as this is a side hustle, I need to balance quality with convenience, and using Studio would likely complicate things. The Wix Editor is super easy to use, and I haven’t run into any real problems while populating my website.

Money management

Running my business as a side hustle means I don’t want to spend ages dealing with the logistics of money. Getting set up for taking payments and managing money on Wix can take a little time, but once it’s done, it mostly runs on its own.

Throughout the day, I get notifications of people making bookings, making payments, and automatic transfers to my bank account.

Wix’s pay links have also been super helpful for keeping ad hoc payments within the same ecosystem as all other payments. They typically take less than 20 seconds to create, and I’ve had feedback from customers on how easy it is to pay via the links.

Booking system

Wix’s booking system was a huge pull for me. With limited time, I didn’t want to be manually dealing with bookings and payments, and with a limited budget, I couldn’t really afford the fancy booking systems that some other gyms use.

We have limited space in the gym, so I need to limit classes to keep them safe. Wix’s booking system made it simple to set class limits, which cut off students’ ability to book once it’s full.

As we’ve grown, we’ve taken on additional instructors and operate across different locations. Dealing with this has been super easy on Wix, with each of my instructors getting notifications about only their classes.

It’s hard to say much more about the booking system, other than that, for what I use it for, it just works.

AI marketing assistant

In mid-2025, Wix launched its Wix marketing assistant. Being time poor, it made sense to explore this feature for my business, and I saw mixed results.

The AI Marketing Assistant offers support across SEO, paid ads, social media, and email marketing.

Apart from paid ads (I don’t run them), I turned them all on to start. Right now, only the SEO assistant is still running. I find this assistant helpful for its SEO suggestions that target my blog posts and pages. Given the nature of my business, local SEO and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) are super important.

I found the AI-generated blog posts, email marketing campaigns, and social media content far too generic for my business, especially the images. We are local and keep things super personal. Most of the content we post is about what's happened/happening/going to happen at the club, but the content the AI produced just didn’t hit the mark.

I expect this type of content may be better suited to businesses that target national or global audiences. Even then, it would need a high degree of human oversight to make it fit for purpose.

Email marketing

Email marketing has become an essential part of engaging with my current and potential future students. I’ve been using Wix’s email marketing platform to send regular updates on what’s happening at the club, offers we are running, and a monthly newsletter.

Everyone who subscribes via the website is added to my contacts, making managing lists easy. The email editor is basic compared to more advanced platforms like MailChimp, but it offers everything you need to send regular, attractive emails. Templates and themes make it much quicker to send consistently branded and formatted emails.

For a side hustle, it meets all my needs; for anything more advanced, you’d need to look elsewhere.

Analytics

Wix offers all the analytics you expect from a website platform, with some helpful additions like ‘user queries’ on AI.

You can dive deep into the analytics, but you can also build a customized snapshot for your homepage.

Watching bookings and traffic happen in real time can be addictive, although not especially helpful. However, you can also watch visitors as they journey through your site, which, although it feels a little creepy, can give you helpful insight into how people use your site and where bottlenecks might be.

Automations

Although I didn’t originally pick Wix for its automations, it has been a massive time saver for me.

Each time someone books a class, there is important safety information they need to read and forms they need to fill out. Automating an email for when someone made their first booking was as easy as selecting the trigger, then designing the email and hitting ‘publish’.

As I use Wix Forms, I also get a handy notification once a form is completed. However, it would be easier to ensure no one falls through the gaps if Wix let you see a list of your contacts with a note on which ones had completed which form.

I’ve also been able to use automations for marketing purposes, such as requesting reviews after a certain number of sessions, helping me grow without extra legwork.

Over the last couple of years, I have had a couple of occasions where the automations randomly broke, leading to some confusion and time fixing them, but overall, they have saved me much more time than they have taken from me.

Dropshipping

Community and brand are a big part of Borderlands Grappling, and our members proudly wear our merch. But with limited space and funds, I didn’t want to hold piles of hoodies and t-shirts in various sizes. This is where Wix’s integration with dropshipping provider Printful came in helpful.

By connecting my Wix store with Printful, I could design and sell merchandise without ever having to hold stock. People simply order from our online store, and Printful fulfils it on my behalf.

It works perfectly for my needs, but profits are low. With convenience comes high costs, which means adding anything more than a tiny percentage of profit to each item is impractical.

For me, dropshipping lets me build community and get our brand out in the local area.

Would I recommend Wix for side hustlers?

There are endless options when it comes to launching a business website. Code from scratch, pick from one of the best website builders, use a CMS, select a hosting provider – the list goes on.

Which approach is right for you depends on your situation. Wix isn’t the cheapest option, but it is affordable. It keeps things simple with everything in one place, but this can also limit flexibility in some areas.

Some businesses will outgrow Wix, needing more advanced features and tools. But Wix is a great place to start, especially for those who run side hustles.

Automattic and WordPress.com CEO Matt Mullenweg has weighed in on Cloudflare's launch of EmDash, rejecting the company's claim that the new project is WordPress's spiritual successor.

In a blog post, Mullenweg explains why EmDash isn't the website builder's spiritual successor, why EmDash hasn't solved the plug-in problem it criticized WordPress for, and how security issues can be fixed in the future.

"It’s all built on open source and web standards," he asserts. "You can run it anywhere; there’s no lock-in."

Mullenweg rejects EmDash claims

Mullenweg explained WordPress can run anywhere, from a Raspberry Pi or a smartphone to a cheap server or across multiple hyperscaler data centers – it's all the same code. On the flip side, he sees EmDash as an opportunity to sell Cloudflare services.

Mullenweg uses the post to praise Cloudflare, noting the company's status as a "top engineering organization" that's pro-open-source.

All in all, he doesn't have a bad word to say about EmDash or Cloudflare in principle, however for interoperability and avoiding vendor lock-in, he notes that EmDash only runs optimally on Cloudflare.

As for the plug-in issue, Mullenweg explained that their unrestricted power is a feature, not a flaw, but artificial intelligence could significantly improve their security within the next 18 months.

"I actually think the product is very solid, there’s some excellent engineering, migration tools, it’s very fast, and the Astro integration is nice," he concludes.

So while EmDash isn't the spiritual successor to WordPress in Mullenweg's eyes, he welcomes the competition and supports that it's open-source. However, if there is to be a spiritual successor, it would be "even more open."

Cloudflare has lifted the wraps off EmDash, a new open source CMS that it deems to be the "spiritual successor" to WordPress.

The company explained an overwhelming majority (96%) of WordPress vulnerabilities come from plugins, which have full access to the database and filesystem, and run in the same environment as the core code without any isolation.

To tackle this, Cloudflare is putting each EmDash plugin in an isolated sandbox, called Dynamic Workers, with plugins having to declare exactly which permission it needs upfront.

Cloudflare says EmDash is more secure than WordPress

In its announcement, Cloudflare criticized the fact that existing WordPress plugins must be trusted, and that their availability on centralized plugin marketplaces serves to give them a good reputation. WordPress.org currently manually reviews and approves every plugin for the platform, and there's a queue of around 800 plugins right now that need to be verified.

Instead of this trust, EmDash plugins must be secure by design. And because developers can ship plugins with any license running independently of EmDash that run in secure sandboxes, Cloudflare is able to do away with the marketplace lock-in it criticizes.

Better still, EmDash is built to the scale-to-zero principle, meaning that it only bills for CPU time when it's actually operating – "it scales back down to zero if there are no requests," the company wrote.

"We’ve bet on this architecture at Cloudflare in part because we believe in having low cost and free tiers, and that everyone should be able to build websites that scale," Senior Product Manager Matt Taylor and Senior Principal Systems Engineer Matt Kane added.

For the front end, EmDash is powered by Astro which allows users to build themes of pages, layouts, components, styles and and more.

Finally, Cloudflare describes EmDash as an "AI native CMS" that includes Agent Skills, CLI and a built-in MCP server.

Top website builder Wix has announced a new integration with ChatGPT that will allow users to create a site with just a few prompts.

The launch will see users able to build a professional-grade Wix Harmony website directly within the ChatGPT interface, using the ChatGPT prompt “@Wix” to begin.

Built using OpenAI’s Apps SDK and powered by Wix’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), the service can be started with text or voice, giving builders a whole new way to kick-start their development.

How to create a website with Wix

After creating the website, users can add relevant business capabilities, analyze the performance, or implement changes, all through natural language - and users who are already using Wix can now connect the new app and manage their assets through ChatGPT.

“By adding another powerful entry point to Wix Harmony, we’re making it even easier for anyone to start, run and grow their online presence in the environments they already use every day,” said Shahar Talmi, GM of Developer Platform at Wix.

The company stressed that every app created this way runs on Wix’s enterprise-grade infrastructure, and comes with ecommerce, scheduling, payments, SEO, and other capabilities, by default.

The Wix app is now available to ChatGPT users in markets where the app directory is supported.

SiteGround has four similar plans – Jump Start, Business, Business Plus, and Super Power – are available. Jump Start is $100/mo, while Super Power is $400/mo. As with Bluehost, discounts are available with 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month plans, 5% on the 3 month plan and 10% on the longer options.

Bluehost also has website building options, but relies on Sitejet. This is not a bad choice, but it is inferior to SiteGround Website Builder. Both hosts offer AI-guided template selection and theming via WordPress.

Support

Both hosts offer 24/7 support, aiming to resolve technical issues. However, as these are managed VPS solutions, Bluehost and SiteGround offer different approaches.

Bluehost provides support via AI chat bot (“BLU”), live chat, and a telephone chat team. In our experience, the AI chat bot seemed to be trained on outdated material – for example, it was unable to assist with accurate steps for setting up a website. Further interactions with a human agent were hampered with cookie cutter responses that failed to resolve a specific database-related query. That aside, Bluehost has a searchable knowledgebase and operates a free WordPress course.

SiteGround operates credits-based support model. These need to be purchased in advance of requiring support, or can be retained on a subscription basis. This has a couple of shortcomings. First, it adds considerable cost to an already expensive plan (Bluehost plans include support). Second, (perhaps most crucially), you cannot initiate contact for a specific problem without paying first. If your budget stretches to a subscription for Expert Care credits, it is worth considering if you’re already edging towards SiteGround.

Performance comparison

To get an idea of how these hosts handle a typical WordPress-powered store, we set one up with WooCommerce. This was then tested with WordPress Benchmark, a plugin for the CMS that rates CPU and RAM, network speed, and object cache, before offering an overall score.

We also used the YABS benchmarking script to assess the the server infrastructure and environment, confirming it matches the advertised specification and offers adequate bandwidth.

Verdict

SiteGround and Bluehost managed VPS hosting plans are closely matched in terms of features, but there is a clear gap between them in terms of pricing and performance. Even when comparing both hosts over a 12 month plan with a discount, Bluehost is around 30% less than SiteGround, and that’s before considering the option of support credits. Everything is bundled with Bluehost’s managed VPS – the same is not true of SiteGround.

That said, the implementation of the SiteGround Website Builder is impressive, delivering a straightforward and effective solution to instant website building. This tool is on par with Wix, a website building and hosting tool that has become a popular alternative to WordPress. In a press release shared with TechRadar Pro earlier this week, Wix and Intuit said that Wix users can now connect directly to QuickBooks Online inside the Intuit ecosystem. If you’re not aware of QuickBooks Online, it is a cloud-based accounting software designed primarily for small and medium-sized businesses.

Website building giants Wix and Squarespace will be going head-to-head, battling it out for millions of viewers' attention. With 30-seconds of ad space reportedly costing between $8 and $10 million, the stakes have never been higher.

Squarespace's 12th Super Bowl ad spot is a cinematic piece, featuring Emma Stone, and offers a hidden message for those who can find it. For Wix, it's a massive return to the Big Game to debut its new "vibe coding" AI tool, Wix Harmony.

With Super Bowl ad breaks becoming a show all on their own, Wix and Squarespace will be joined by other brand giants, including Bosch, Bud Light, Expedia, Pringles, Pepsi, and Ritz.

Squarespace gets creative

Squarespace is the number one website builder choice for creatives. So, it is little surprise that its ad takes an artsy approach to capturing the audience's attention.

Recent Super Bowl ads from the website-building platform have been directed by the likes of Martin Scorsese and starred the likes of Barry Keoghan. This time, Squarespace has teamed up with Academy Award-winner Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos to push its domain purchasing service.

This isn’t the first time Stone and Lanthimos have met, having worked together on several high-profile projects, including the Oscar-winning Poor Things.

The ad is unmistakably cinematic and makes light of Stone’s inability to purchase emmastone.com, warning viewers to secure their domain of choice before it's too late.

After watching the ad, I was curious as to whether Emma had been able to secure emmastone.com. Turns out she has.

If you visit the site, you unlock a secret message from Emma, warning you to "avoid years and years of anguish” by securing your domain name today.

According to Squarespace, the ad will air between the first and second quarters of Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026.

Wix goes heavy on vibe

Wix has taken a more direct approach with its ad, focusing on the recent release of its vibe coding and website-building platform Wix Harmony. By purchasing some of the most expensive ad space for a brand new offering, Wix shows its hand, investing heavily into vibe coding.

I can’t see Wix winning any creative awards for this ad, but I do love it for its motivational vibe, clear messaging, and targeted approach towards small business owners and entrepreneurs.

It’s clearly a popular approach, with the video already receiving 3 million views since it was posted on YouTube just two days ago.

Is GoDaddy advertising at Super Bowl 2026?

Last year, GoDaddy purchased a Super Bowl ad spot to push its then recently released Airo tool. I reached out to GoDaddy to see if they would be running another hilarious ad this year, but they aren’t.

However, they did inform me that the “award-winning campaign featuring Emmy-nominated actor Walton Goggins continues to run on TV, the web, and other channels”.

Website builder platform Duda just introduced a new feature that aims to solve a big problem with AI-generated websites.

In a press release shared with TechRadar Pro earlier this week, Duda said that most AI-generated and “vibe-coded” websites suffer from the same ailments - repetitive designs, insecure, and unoptimized code.

In order to address it, the company built a new feature called “Populate Template with AI”. It works by analyzing the structure of a website template in order to identify opportunities for content injection. Then it updates text and widgets with new content, while making sure it stays relevant to the specific client for whom the website is being built.

The overall structure and layout of the website do not change in the process, Duda says, and stresses that the process can further be tweaked by giving the AI instructions on style or tone. The AI can also be given directives to highlight specific selling points or to avoid certain phrases or clichés.

Rolling out to partners

The tool, which Duda claims is an “industry-first”, will first be available to Duda’s partners via an API, before its global rollout.

The company also says that since the foundational template is built using its website architecture (as opposed to being AI-generated itself), the sites will retain the highest average Core Web Vital scores in the industry. This should help the website’s visibility and overall search engine optimization.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has made a grand entrance into the world of website development, completely transforming the industry. Wix has taken its AI-powered website creation to the next level with the introduction of Wix Harmony.

In the last couple of months, most of the best website builder companies introduced generative artificial intelligence (AI), letting builders “vibe code” their sites. In theory, they would simply tell the chatbot what kind of website they needed, and the AI would generate the entire site, content and all.

For Wix, there are multiple problems with that approach:

The biggest problem is that the websites are either demos or lightweight MVSs, instead of full-scale, production-ready websites. These sites are created in a “bubble”, and, as such, can include bugs, security gaps, and code that cannot scale. The second problem is the rigidity of the designs, making it difficult to tweak and optimize the AI’s output.

Solving the problem with Aria

Wix says Harmony solves that problem by merging human and artificial intelligence. At the core of the product is Aria, its AI tool built on Wix’s underlying architecture. After generating a website, the designer can use Wix’s standard drag-and-drop interface to make changes and optimize the site as they see fit. They can then return to the AI for more refinements, since it will understand the context and the changes made in the meantime.

Furthermore, since Aria is built on Wix’s underlying architecture, making changes in one area shouldn’t break the code, add bugs, or change the functionality in a different part of the site.

“Every action is applied across the experience, backed by the same production‑grade quality and reliability that support millions of businesses on Wix,” the company said in a press release shared with TechRadar Pro earlier this week.

Wix Harmony will begin rolling out in English in the coming weeks, Wix further stated, saying it will “gradually become available” to all Wix users. Pricing details, or pricing tiers, are not known at this time.

Although AI is already widely integrated into the majority of top website builders, users often find new AI tools and the more familiar drag-and-drop tools working against each other, making it hard to create the website they want.

Aria AI feels like the natural next step in AI integration, helping move AI from a helpful extra into something fundamental to the website-building process. By combining an AI helper with a visual editor, Wix aims to unlock higher levels of flexibility and creativity for users.

Ally, Elementor’s web accessibility plugin, just got a browser version that should make checking for website accessibility issues a breeze.

Elementor is a popular WordPress website builder plugin that lets users design websites visually using a drag-and-drop interface without needing to write code. It has a web accessibility plugin designed to help site owners identify, understand, and fix accessibility issues, all in line with WCAG guidelines.

Web accessibility is about designing websites so that people with disabilities can perceive, navigate, and interact with the websites effectively. Not only does it enable inclusivity, but it also expands the potential audience and helps meet legal requirements (such as the WCAG guidelines, for example).

Elementor first released its web accessibility plugin called Ally in November 2025. The company argued it was better than competing products since it offered solutions to the issues it identifies and walks web administrators through the process of applying them.

Remediation engine

“Accessibility tools usually just scream at you about what’s wrong. Ally actually fixes it,” they said. “Ally is different because it’s a ‘Remediation Engine’.”

However, the process still required installing a plugin which, as Elementor said in a press release it shared with TechRadar Pro, was a point of “friction”. To eliminate that friction, it turned Ally into a browser accessibility scanner that can be accessed, entirely free, on this link.

Called Pay Links, the tool enables users to create dedicated URLs for payment, which can then be shared across a myriad of different platforms - via text, social media, QR codes, or even embedded as links on websites.

“For small businesses and solopreneurs juggling seasonal demands, getting paid should be effortless,” Squarespace said in a press release. “Pay Links offer a fast way to collect payments with professional, branded design, built-in security, and integrated tools for tracking and analytics.”
