I already had the Y here, so it was simply a case of finding the P to make up LYMPH.

Y was the hero letter of the day featuring in the trickiest word but also helping out at the end of two others — MOLDY and MEALY — making for an easier game than usual.

I was thrilled when I spotted the words ENDING IN UNITS OF LENGTH straight off the bat, but then disappointed when it turned out to be blue instead of purple.

The hardest group of the day honor went to another set of words where the ending was significant, in this case ENDING IN SYNONYMS FOR FOLLOW SECRETLY.

I missed the purple group completely and I think it's because I had already connected one ENDING group and assumed there would not be another. I really should know better, as this is classic Connections trickery.

Some days the theme puzzles me, but today was one of those where you get it immediately and spot the spangram first.

After this it was just a case of finding the various churchy things — of which there are legions.

My favorite thing you see INCHURCH was not included: stained glass windows. I love them and think they should be everywhere — schools, supermarkets, police stations, stadiums — not just picturing the life and times of saints but also the incredible wonders of the secular world.

I really messed up today’s game and lost my win streak in the process.

Instead of playing tactically and getting MYRRH sooner (I spotted too late that without vowels there was only one possibility) I persisted in trying to get a word with too many options and ran out of guesses.

This is the first game of Connections I’ve lost since March 2025 and apart from BLACK-AND-YELLOW I had no idea what any of the groups were about.

Things got off to a bad start when I guessed SILO instead of CHARLIE BROWN, but after I corrected that I was utterly in the dark; I had a couple of pairs in INDIA INK and DIP PEN, and HIVEMIND and BUBBLE, but beyond that i was clueless.

What is extra annoying is that I cannot blame my loss on cultural differences and being based in the UK — especially as the relatively obscure BASS ALE is a British brand.

There were so many Vs in today’s game that I convinced myself that the word “vinyl” was in the grid somewhere and that the theme was all about crate digging and finding some secret album.

I could not have been more wrong. Something I only learned after two hints gave me SLINKY and VELCRO and I realized I had wasted five minutes daydreaming about record shops.

It was not until I got the spangram — and eliminated the last of the Vs — that I finally realized what the search was about and how one of the greatest medical discoveries of history was connected to a spring that goes downstairs.

Now that this game is completed I can’t believe I completely missed “COLD” THINGS IN IDIOMS while I exerted all my energies on muddling together the other three groups.

I made mistakes for all of them — CONTINUE instead of EASE for MOVE SLOWLY (UP TO); SHOULDER (I was thinking of soldiering on, no doubt) instead of MAKE IT for PERSEVERE; and COMFORT instead of MILES for AIRLINE STATUS PERKS.

I have only ever been in an airport LOUNGE once and it felt like that episode of The Simpsons when Homer gets a glimpse at the life beautiful people live. The beautiful people would probably be less impressed by free shrimp than I was.

This was a fun game even if I did find it quite taxing.

My first mistake was thinking that GREAT WHITE indicated that there was a group of sharks — HARBOR and BULL sounded possible, so I added BENES as a possible fourth. BULL and GREAT WHITE are correct of course and a Google search told me Ben’s Shark is a thing!

When I got down to eight tiles I managed to make two mistakes, even though I knew the connection was sitcoms; BING couldn’t be much else. I recognised SCOTT from The Office but had to play around with GREEN before finally getting the right quartet. Frankly I’m annoyed at myself for not watching more Seinfeld.

Making a difference is what a lot of people set out to do: make their stamp on the world, let people know they are there. But, I’m not entirely sure it’s a good thing — bad people can make a difference too. Thieves make a big difference.

Personally, I prefer Arnold Schwarzenegger’s maxim “be useful” — far less likely to stray into negative territory if you are being useful. Well, unless you're a getaway driver for a gang of thieves.

Anyway, I digress. Today’s game took me a while to begin so I took a hint and then after getting GIVE and DONATE said to myself “this sounds a lot like PHILANTHROPY”. A timely reminder that money should circulate and can be used for good.

It was very pleasant to see some tiles made up of single words after a run of two-worded tiles, but it didn’t make pouting the four groups together any easier.

That is until I had a blinding moment of revelation and remembered that I had watched the English Premier league on USA Network and BET, BRAVO and HISTORY were also TV stations of note, not that I know them as BASIC CABLE CHANNELS.

From here it all came together like a charm and I wondered why I was ever confused. That, though, is part of the magic that is Connections: bafflement and enlightenment within seconds.

The key to my “purple first” success today was saying aloud to myself “not by the hair on my chinny chin-chin”. This in turn made me think of Colonel Saunders and his resplendent white goatee and although I have never seen Doctor Strange I was pretty sure I’d seen a poster of Benedict Cumberbatch sporting some hair on his chinny chin chin.

The other groups I found much harder and I made a mistake assembling the green group.

I knew that the thread was something to do with buying tickets, but didn’t understand WILL CALL, so selected ORDER NUMBER.

In the process, I remembered a recent concert I went to where the only entry was via MOBILE TICKET, but my phone battery was at 1%; I made it in just as the screen died.

I’m glad I held back from getting GAVEL until later in the game.

I spotted “positive”, “proof” and “specific” as non-game words before seeing them as the spangram and adding an S to get to the SPECIFICS.

This, then, was a game of feeling around in the dark before gradually completing the board, rather than a smashing through — or maybe I was slower just because it’s a Monday?

Either way, it was a pleasure to complete a game celebrating the bedrock of good journalism, as opposed to the opinion and bluster that makes up most of the media landscape.

Everyone’s knows that GOODNIGHT MOON is one of a handful of CLASSIC CHILDREN’S BOOKS (the “bowl full of mush” always puzzled me) and I was sure MADELINE was too, but I couldn’t see any others — so decided to put this possible group to one side. In fact, you could say I decided to TAKE A DIFFERENT APPROACH.

After landing the yellow group I decided that SPACE OPERA and SPAGHETTI WESTERN belonged together and guessed that NEO-NOIR and BUDDY COP could also be labeled as MOVIE SUBGENRES.

With eight tiles left the titles of children’s books were not popping out for me, so I took a risk connecting things that sounded like you could get trapped in and added JURY DUTY as a random fourth tile.

It was hard to ignore the two Xs on the board, so that’s where I began first — spying LUXURY and then EXTRAVAGANCE, although I did manage to start the latter with the wrong letter E, quite a drag for a 12-letter word.

After this burst I ground to a halt and busied myself with finding some interesting non-game words. A hint gave me TREAT, but I had to spend a good couple of minutes staring at these five letters before I connected them in the right order.

After all this, I think I’m going to pamper myself with a scoop of vegan ice cream.

I watch the occasional black and white movie from the 1930s and they are always saying things like HOT DOG, HURRAH, WHOOPEE, YAHOO, so this yellow group came easily enough.

My error came with the purple group. I saw that SAFETY was a link between BELT, PIN and GOGGLES but plumped for PHRASE as my fourth tile — I was thinking this is an expression people use in wrestling or something when things have got too serious.

Meanwhile, I'm glad I managed to collect the four words meaning CONVEY, as WORDS ABBREVIATED WITH LETTERS AS HOMOPHONES flew way over my head.

After a Strands yesterday that made no sense it was a relief to return to the world of real words, albeit ones connected to a thing designed to make you feel unwell.

I say that because I always feel unwell on — or even at the thought of — a ROLLERCOASTER, but I know they bring a great deal of pleasure to lots of people — including my own family, who enjoy seeing me turn green.

These days, my favorite thrill is spotting a Strands word that goes up or down in a CORKSCREW and today I got that with the word CORKSCREW.

“Solid” was Connections’ assessment of my performance today, which is very generous considering I messed up both COMPONENTS OF A CANDLE and COLD THINGS.

For COLD THINGS I thought it was specifically about keeping things cold, but after feeling confident about LIQUID NITROGEN, REFRIGERATOR, and SNOW, I panicked and selected JAR.

Next, I was certain we were looking for something to do with candles but instead of JAR I picked SHAFT, reasoning that it described the shape of a traditional candle.

When you have a 13-letter word and it is not even the spangram then you know you have just played a difficult game.

Even though this only involved four game words, plus the (incredibly long) spangram, finding the words was indeed quite the struggle — even with the head start of a hint word.

Adding to the difficulty were slight regional variations, as I grew up calling things a “thingamebob” rather than THINGAMAJIGGY and had never heard of DOOHICKEY until I somehow put the letters together to form something approaching a word.

If you completed this without a hint then kudos.

After seeing the two B-words immediately I made a wrong guess with my third word.

Fortunately, the letters I had left meant that after guessing “pause” AMUSE was the only alternative, while CEDAR was just a case of rearranging five letters.

I was utterly confused by today’s game, but somehow managed to get away with just two mistakes.

The only thing I was certain of was that BARCLAYS CENTER is the home of the Brooklyn Nets, but this meager piece of knowledge didn’t help at all. First, I linked BOWLING ALLEY, SWIMMING POOL, HOCKEY RINK and TENNIS COURT thinking these were all amenities every town should have (they are right).

Then after threading together ICONIC ROMAN LANDMARKS with the idea that they all sounded like historical tourist spots, I made another mistake linking ALPHABET BLOCKS, TENNIS COURT, BOWLING ALLEY and BARCLAYS CENTER — reasoning that they all described types of buildings.

Somehow, shuffling around the various options got me over the line, but this really was a game I should have lost.

This game came to me in stages.

First I managed to find CHERRY while searching for non-game words, then in the belief that we were looking for fruit trees I took a hint and was given REDBUD, which changed my thinking completely.

Spotting “tree” and “flower” I managed to put together the spangram and then complete the board. Like the act of gardening and maintaining a FLOWERINGTREE it felt like a long, but rewarding process.

It has taken me a long time, but I have finally realized that I need to take some games of Quordle more slowly.

Today was a good example of this. With multiple possibilities of a word ending O-U-N-D I had to use the other words to eliminate letters, before MOUND became the only possibility.
