Minor spoilers for Practical Magic 2 ahead.

"I like this... your molecules next to my molecules. It's chemistry," is a verbatim line from Practical Magic 2 that sent a wave of groans around my screening room in a way that I've never experienced collective groaning before. This, in a nutshell, sums up the experience of watching a legacy sequel that hasn't delivered.

Of course, we're living through an industry spike of dusting off old IPs for a box office resurgence, which in itself is frustrating. But in the main — think Top Gun: Maverick, Freakier Friday and The Devil Wears Prada 2 — these have been successful replicas. I've no doubt that Practical Magic 2 will do big theatrical numbers over the next few weeks... but where is the actual magic?

Whereas my three examples stayed largely true to the essence of their original stories, Practical Magic 2 has veered too far away from what made it so special to begin with. This time around, Sally Owens' (Sandra Bullock) daughters, Kylie (Joey King) and Antonia (Maisie Williams), are all grown up, but magic is no longer a part of their lives.

But when Kylie's boyfriend has a fatal accident, the Owens curse returns to the surface. It's up to Sally and Gillian (Nicole Kidman) to work together to make things right, which is where the sequel transforms from whimsical nineties Massachusetts vibes into a knockoff Harry Potter film.

It's a pretty underwhelming setup, and that's before we dissect the continually poor narrative choices that the creative team makes. Pretty soon, the action is split between the US and UK, and that's only bad news for everybody involved.

Practical Magic 2 comes too far away from what makes the original special

Before I get too carried away with the faults of Practical Magic 2, let's start with the good. When they're left to their own devices, the Owens sisters are as loving, mischievous and playful as they ever were, and those moments are a portal straight back to 1998. Their house is exactly as we left it, and spending time in their hometown is a bittersweet reminder of the cosy 90s whimsy we've left behind.

But the real stars of the show are Dianne Wiest (Aunt Jet) and Stockard Channing (Aunt Franny), for whom this sequel feels like an extension of who they were 28 years ago. When the storyline strays too far from what we want (more on that later), Practical Magic 2 still proves that the greatest love story ever told is between these two sisters... and by God, how lucky we are to have them, characters and actors alike.

From here, it's all downhill. It's almost difficult to critique the movie in exactly the way I want to, because in doing so, I'd spoil absolutely everything about it. So you're going to need to trust me when I say that at every conceivable turn, it lets the original down.

Let's start with the fact that Practical Magic 2 feels nothing like its predecessor — and reliving the feeling of the first is the number one reason why people will be buying a ticket. Yes, there are nods to the moments that put the first film on the map (such as the midnight margaritas), but they feel as though they've been included disingenuously.

Then there are the narrative decisions that made me wonder why a sequel was even being made in the first place (obviously for the money, Jasmine). 25 minutes in, there is a choice so catastrophic that the rest of the movie felt sullied, and the story only gets further from the events of the first film from there. We're trying to break a generational curse for a boy who means nothing to us? And not Sally's two lovely, but dead, husbands? Okay then.

The men somehow find themselves at the center of the drama, despite how much the dialogue vapidly thrusts the importance of sisterhood onto us. Aside from the haphazard CGI, our final showdown is bafflingly boring, with the real curse being having to listen to how a man we've never met before feels wronged because he can't have something that doesn't belong to him.

Joey King gets a huge slice of the action throughout all of this, but I can't help feeling sorry for Maisie Williams. We know how brilliant she is, yet she's incredibly underused... to the point where you might forget that she's actually in the movie. If I was an Owens, I'd be kicking off purely because of the huge sibling favouritism, put it that way.

It's a particularly hilarious watch if you're British

My favourite part — because it's so badly done — is the transition of Practical Magic 2 to UK soil. This shouldn't be too much of a surprise given how widely publicized their filming across the city was, but as a Brit, things take on an entirely different meaning.

We start with the introduction of sorcerer Ian Wright (Lee Pace), who the Aunts recommend to the Owens sisters to help Kylie. If you aren't from the UK, then you might not know that this is also the name of a very famous footballer and sports pundit, making every use of his full name (which is surprisingly a lot) leave me chanting his signature "Ian Wright Wright Wright!" heckle under my breath instead of staying rooted in the dwindling story.

As a friend of mine put it, "I'd have given this five stars if Wright had played this as himself," as seriously as Michael Caine in The Muppets Christmas Carol. Frankly, everything else that's happening is so woefully disconnected from the Practical Magic I know and love that I'd have genuinely enjoyed him running up to Bullock and booting a ball into the back of a net as a distraction.

But alas, Hollywood has given their view of England the Notting Hill treatment. If you didn't know better, you'd think that Agatha Christie-style trains could be picked up with ease between Paddington and North Weald stations, and that small aesthetic buses with charming drivers can drop you off in a town resembling the set of The Sheep Detectives.

The most offensive choice, in my opinion, is the insinuation that Brits eat savory pies with... custard. Served out of gravy boats, no less. I see it as my public duty to highlight that if you watch Practical Magic 2 before visiting England and try to ask for this in a local pub, you will be laughed out of there, and rightly so. The fact that this is the detail I feel most about in the entire movie tells you how low the mighty has fallen.

The cherry on the cake, however, is the unexpected casting of British comedic actor of Ghosts and Taskmaster fame, Katy Wix. She's not boozing in the background in UK scenes, but has instead inserted herself into the heart of the Owens' community back home. She plays a pivotal part in the party scene with a drunken auntie aura that I can only feel immensely proud of. Her face also suggests she has no idea how she's ended up starring alongside Bullock and Kidman. No notes.

Take my wittering on about bodged Britishisms that don't matter as a stark warning: if you are a true fan of the original, avoid Practical Magic 2 at all costs. Look what it has done to its legacy, and to me in turn. If this were the end of a war movie, I'd be telling you to save yourselves while I lay bleeding to death on a scenic European beach. Don't make my sacrifice be for nothing.

The Legend of Zelda Movie's official title has been revealed — and it breaks a long-standing tradition for the incredibly popular Nintendo video game series.

Announced today (September 8) during the September 2026 Nintendo Direct, the forthcoming film's full name is — drumroll, please — The Legend of Zelda.

Okay, so Nintendo and film studio partner Sony Pictures won't be winning any creativity awards for that name. That said, it's a clean, subtitle-less name that's not only fitting for the game franchise's forthcoming big-screen debut, but also an homage to the series' first-ever entry — that being, the identically-titled 1986 game The Legend of Zelda.

The movie adaptation's title is even more appropriate when you consider that the beloved game series is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, too. The aforementioned game is the only one that doesn't have a subheading, either, so it makes sense why Nintendo would want to honor one of its longest-running series by giving it the same name as the game that started it all.

As much as I was hoping for an actual teaser and/or more official cast reveals — right now, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth's Link and Bo Bragason's Zelda are the only characters confirmed to appear — I might not have to wait too long for those wishes to be granted.

Indeed, speaking during today's dedicated Legend of Zelda Direct, Nintendo President Shigeru Miyamoto said "We'll share more details at a later date". Hopefully, there'll be another Nintendo Direct before the end of 2026 that lifts the lid on its cast and plot, and finally gives us some footage to pore over.

It's been a while since Nintendo revealed anything new about this flick. Apart from Ainsworth and Bragason's casting in May 2025, the release of The Legend of Zelda Movie's first official images last September, and confirmation of The Legend of Zelda Movie's revised release date in May, the Japanese video game titan has been tight-lipped on its next film offering for some time.

That's not to say there haven't been leaks. Just last month, reports emerged that The Legend of Zelda Movie had found its Ganondorf and Impa, with the former being played by an unlikely choice. Meanwhile, the late Sam Neill is also seemingly set for one final big-screen outing — the Jurassic Park star and Yvonne Strahovski being linked with supporting roles in one of 2027's most anticipated new movies. Let's hope Nintendo has the courage and wisdom to tell us more shortly.

Nobody likes a cancelation. Whether it's a flight or your favorite TV series, it never seems to get any easier. Prime Video's recent decision to cancel its new series Spider-Noir left many fans devastated, including me.

There are lots of comic book adaptations out there, and for me, Spider-Noir did more than enough to stand out from the crowd. Nicolas Cage brought his Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse character to life brilliantly, so it's a shame we won't see any more.

Having said that, Cage himself has been optimistic about the show's cancelation in a new statement received by Deadline. In it, he said: “For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man. Onwards, upwards, inwards.”

Perhaps it's true and it's possible to have too much of a good thing. Season one is indeed excellent, and since it earned a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score and secured five Creative Arts Emmys, including stunt coordination and title design, it's undeniably one of the best Prime Video shows.

Across eight episodes, Spider-Noir centered around Cage's Ben Reilly aka 'The Spider', an older version of Spider-Man who is a down on his luck private investigator. Filmed like a classic 1930s detective movie, it focused on themes like grief, systemic corruption, and aging disillusionment.

Additionally, Spider-Noir invited viewers to watch in two ways whether it was 'authentic black and white' or 'true-hue full color'. As someone who loved Rockstar's LA Noire, this was fun to experience on one of the best streaming services too.

Even though Spider-Noir won't be returning, it's a solid entry into the Marvel franchise. Elsewhere, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to be streaming on Disney+ soon, so I'm looking forward to watching that at home.

A new teaser trailer for the documentary Musk has landed on YouTube ahead of the much-anticipated film's premiere today at the Venice Film Festival.

The 48-second teaser (below) provides a taster of the documentary's likely divisive reflections on the world's richest man. It contrasts quotes calling him "the real-life Iron Man" and "the greatest capitalist in history" with some less complementary reactions — with one stating that "in a science fiction novel, he would not be the hero".

The documentary's Academy-Award winning director, Alex Gibney, has a strong track record with pieces about powerful people and corporations, having previously made classics like Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.

His Musk documentary has been over three years in the making, with Gibney revealing that he'd started work on it back in March 2023. Elon Musk isn't particularly happy about the documentary's release, posting on X back on August 6 that "it’s a hit piece" and that "Gibney is incapable of anything else".

Musk says director is trying to 'bore people to death'

Aside from its polarizing subject, the Musk documentary is notable for another reason – its run time is almost four hours. That's something that Musk himself also poked fun at on X, stating "is he trying to bore people to death?"

The trailer doesn't give a huge amount away about its conclusions, but Alex Gibney did reveal a little more in a chat with AP earlier this week. "In some ways it’s a simple story (with) a lot of complicated details," he told AP.

"I think his genius, if there is a genius, is that he is not an inventor, he’s an investor. His genius is stock pumping," he added. We can expect the documentary, like the trailer, to stir a lot of controversy then, particularly as it also delves into Musk's relationship with Trump.

So does Musk himself appear in the documentary, or did he try to prevent it from reaching screens? "He didn’t really except in so far as the fact that people were terribly afraid to speak to me on the record, or at least on camera," Gibney told AP. "They were just terrified of Elon. And these were people in his companies. These were people who knew him well. These were supporters and critics," he added.

The Musk documentary will be released theatrically in the US on October 16. There's currently no confirmation of a UK release, but it's also expected to stream on HBO Max later this year.

“I've seen AIs of me sitting with Obama talking about insane things that we never did”.

George Clooney is clearly concerned about the power that AI has to produce deepfakes that are so real you can’t tell that they’re fake, especially when they contain images of world leaders.

“We were never there having a conversation. It is me doing it. And okay, that's a joke for people. But what happens if you see a video of Putin saying he's launched the first nuclear strike [against] the United States — how do you discern it?”

Clooney was raising his concerns in Venice at the ‘The Future of... Creativity’ symposium presented by Finch & Partners and Creative Artists Agency (CAA). George Clooney and Maggie Gyllenhaal were among the international group of artists, filmmakers, musicians, cultural thinkers and technology leaders who gathered to discuss how technology is changing creative work, and the people who produce it.

The panel discussions were moderated by the journalist and broadcaster Emily Maitlis, who asked Clooney, “is there a fear of replacement, as an actor?”

Clooney acknowledged the risk, but also the problem inherent with AI actors, which is that it’s going to be hard to create an AI movie star: “Well, there's two different conversations we're talking about. As an actor, there will be some portion of that that will be replaced. AI will have the exact same problem that I have as a director, and that we all have as filmmakers, which is how you make a star, because that’s hard to do.”

‘And it fundamentally did not work’

Actor and filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal cited a recent experience with AI on her upcoming short film Flesh Impact about Marilyn Monroe, commenting: “I did try working with AI on this project […] I have a 100-year-old Marilyn Monroe, and then I also have flashbacks to Marilyn Monroe when she's in her 30s. I have Dakota Johnson playing her, who is an incredible artist in my opinion. And the people who commissioned this project asked me to use AI […] and I went for it. I was like, 'All right, I'm curious. I don't know. Let's see.' And it fundamentally did not work.”

Ultimately, Gyllenhaal found that AI was not able to replicate the nuances of human performance and emotion.

“The idea was that we trained it on her. We then put her face on Dakota's face; we worked very hard at it, and in the end, they threw it away because [… ] Dakota playing Marilyn Monroe, was so much more moving, human, alive. All the reasons we decided to make this project to begin with”.

It’s perhaps reassuring to hear filmmakers say that while a fabricated AI clip can be convincing enough to mislead someone, it can’t deliver the emotional depth a director wants from a performance. Gyllenhaal’s experience offers a reason for creative optimism, even as Clooney’s raises concerns about what audiences will believe.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe feels as though it's been on my screen for 500 years, but somehow, each episode feels just as fresh as the next.

We're returning to the militant apocalyptic feel of episode 1 this week, but think more comedy than tragedy. Nobody is losing a leg while somber music plays over the top, put it that way.

Backrooms is one of 2026's best horror movies, as well as being A24's highest grossing movie to date. So it's no surprise that we're about to venture back into the Creepypasta universe, following on from its huge success.

Backrooms found a streaming home on HBO Max, but it sounds like we're not stopping there. According to reports via Dread Central, Kane Parsons has signed on to do a Backrooms sequel, which is simply being referred to as Backrooms 2.

A24 has not officially confirmed this in a press release or social media post, so we will have to wait patiently to see what the studio has to say about it.

So right now, Backrooms 2 is still considered to be in very early stages. But there's plenty of opportunity to develop the story considering how big The Backrooms is. I'm actually feeling quite hopeful about a new follow up movie.

In my Backrooms review, I struggled to find any flaws with the first movie because personally, I thought it was really well done. Kane Parsons had the opportunity to bring his YouTube series and take on the lore to life, alongside some well-known actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, and I'm sure he has plenty more ideas to unleash.

Backrooms and Obsession both dominated the box office for a while, proving that audiences are still excited about horror movies. If another Backrooms movie is in the works, I'm keen to see how well it performs against its predecessor.

Recently, Backrooms has inspired other upcoming movies, with studios and directors now diving back into classic Creepypastas for inspiration. One of these is the upcoming Warner Bros movie Siren Head, which is set to adapt Trevor Henderson's creation.

Creepypasta stories and online lore seem to be a huge inspiration for horror movies at the moment, and there's plenty for us to look forward to over the coming months.

The first episode of The Real Housewives of London season 2 is now streaming exclusively on Hayu — and as one of the lucky few who got to watch the premiere with the Housewives themselves, I can confirm that it's an absolute riot.

It goes without saying that arguments and ever-changing alliances are part and parcel of the format, but fans are likely to be incredibly surprised with just who is chummy with who when season 2 picks up.

Amanda Caroline Cronin and Juliet Angus' infamous "back to Paddington" feud has held strong, but #Lipgate, a clash stemming from Panthea Parker getting lip treatments done at Amanda's clinic and being unhappy with the result, seems to have been smoothed over.

Nobody is more shocked at the seemingly stable Amanda-Panthea friendship than Parker herself, who initially teased that fans would be shocked at just how much friendships have changed between seasons on the Hayu Presents... podcast.

After speaking to her and fellow Housewife Karen Loderick-Peace, I'm surprised they've kept up with who is and isn't getting on.

'You have to take us for who we are here and not listen to gossip'

"Very," Parker responds when I ask her if she's as surprised by what happens in season 2 as fans are set to be. "Especially between me and Amanda. We left the season and I thought I really got to know her, and when at the reunion, she had said, 'You have to take us for who we are here, and not listen to gossip, but not listen to everything that you've heard,' we then really built on that friendship. I think me and her got very close throughout when we weren't filming.

"Coming back, I was a bit shocked at that. Now... I'm just in a place where I think, 'Well, actually, everything everybody said was true, and why should you take people as they are?' If you go to get a plumber, or a good school, you would go and fine one with good recommendations."

"Sadly, that's not how it works in a friendship group," Loderick-Peace adds.

From episode 1, you might think this remark is a little strange. In the season 2 premiere, we see Panthea and Amanda as thick as thieves, even going so far as to go out to lunch with fellow Housewife Nessie Welschinger without so much as a harsh word shared between them. Jokes and non-alcoholic cocktails are flowing, and the vibes are good.

But while we haven't seen the real of RHOL season 2 yet, the trailer alone tells us that the tide is going to turn once again. In my favorite clip of the reality TV series that's been released yet, we see Amanda and Panthea having lunch in a rooftop restaurant, with Panthea saying, "You have Ryanair customer service, and I'm used to flying first class."

When other diners look over to where the pair are loudly arguing, Panthea apologises before adding, "The lady is a tramp." Oof.

What got us to this point is something that I do not know, but if Real Housewives is anything to go by, the catalyst could literally have been anything. Strap in for a turbulent time, is my advice.

After weeks of speculation, the DC Universe (DCU) TV show has lifted the lid on one of its two biggest secrets to date. Of course, the other is who killed Hal Jordan in Lanterns episode 1, but that's a conversation for another day.

So, who has the Manhunter been disguised as? Why has Rushville's townsfolk being keeping them safe from prying eyes? And what will Jordan and his Green Lantern protégé John Stewart do next? Activate your power ring, and let's dive in together…

Lanterns episode 4 confirms Zoe is the Manhunter

That's right, Zoe Macon, the wife and enigmatic benefactor of Rushville ranch owner William Macon, and John Stewart's love interest, is revealed to be the Manhunter.

Zoe was one of three characters I predicted to be the extraterrestrial android in my Manhunters in Lanterns explained article, so I'm absolutely counting that a correct guess on my part.

Wait, hang on: wasn't Zoe killed when her pick-up truck was obliterated by a giant red lazer after she slept with Stewart again? It certainly appeared that way, but there was always something off about Stewart's incredibly muted reaction to her death. That's something Jordan picks up on before the end of the HBO Max show's latest entry, too, so Zoe clearly walked away from that attack unscathed.

There are other telling signs in episode 4, titled 'The Weenie', that indicated that Zoe was the Manhunter.

For one, after Stewart and Jordan are captured following their botched infiltration of Macon Ranch, William tells them that Zoe not only nursed him back to health after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, but also cured him of said disease.

Sure, the high-tech, alien equipment that Stewart and Jordan find in one of the ranch's compounds will have helped to treat Macon. Nonetheless, someone would need to operate said equipment — and, frankly, Macon wouldn't be able to use it if he was as sick as he implies. Alongside her clear medical expertise that far outweighs the scientific knowledge that humanity possesses, Zoe would be the only one capable of using this technology to save Macon's life, and subsequently earn his trust and unwavering devotion to keep her secret safe.

That's not to say that Lanterns doesn't try and distract us about Zoe being the Manhunter. Indeed, the DCU Chapter One TV series' fourth installment attempts to further pull the wool over our eyes when Jordan and Stewart investigate Zoe's apparent demise.

With Sheriff Kerry Kane's help, they learn the lazer satellite manufacturer is Atlas Inc. Primarily a slaughterhouse firm, Atlas is owned by someone named Hector Hammond, who partnered with William Macon 30 years earlier to develop innovative technology to refine and improve the meat processing industry. Hey, Macon is a cattle herder, so it makes sense that he'd go into business with someone like Hammond.

Anyway, when Jordan and Stewart pay Hammond a visit, the latter seems to confirm that Macon is the Manhunter. Of course, this is a massive fake out designed to throw us, Stewart, and Jordan off the scent over the Manhunter's real identity. Luckily, Jordan sees through the façade and, after an incredibly tense stand-off that almost sees Hammond activate another of his weaponized satellites to annihilate Stewart's parents, Jordan forces Hammond to reveal the truth about the Manhunter's true identity.

What'll happen in Lanterns episode 5?

Very few people know the answer to that question — and, predictably, those that do aren't going to spoil anything ahead of time. Even so, Zoe being outed as the Manhunter raises plenty of questions heading into the sci-fi crime drama's next episode.

Considering Will Macon has been the main beneficiary of Zoe's help, why is Rushville's entire population steadfast in its desire to maintain her secret? Have they all been aided or manipulated by Zoe, too?

Furthermore, what's up with Stewart agreeing to help Zoe fake her own death? And, now that Jordan knows Stewart lied to him about Zoe and left him trapped in a crashed car, will Jordan take matters into his own hands and take on the entire Nebraskan town alone?

Alternatively, if Jordan and Stewart somehow make peace with each other, and if they take the fight to Zoe and the people of Rushville, how much are the latter willing to risk to sacrifice to defend their home? Lastly, how will Antaan and his alien brethren, who want revenge on Zoe after she committed mass genocide on their home world, factor into all of this?

I'm certain we'll get answers to the above when Lanterns' fifth episode debuts on HBO Max, aka one of the world's best streaming services, on September 13/14.

Right now, one thing is clear: if Jordan and/or Stewart plan on killing Zoe, they'll have to do so while she's in human form. Remember, in episode 2, Antaan told Stewart that Manhunters are easier to execute as humans. Slaying her before she takes her true form, or builds herself a new body if she's critically injured in the fight to come, then, is the only way to end the threat for good.

With all six episodes of the new series of The Grand Tour now on Prime Video, you've probably binged them as quickly as I did.

I was so pleasantly surprised by the natural chemistry between new presenters James Engelsman, Thomas Holland and Francis Bourgeois that now I want to see the trio do even more together.

Head to YouTube and you'll find some additional videos of the trio together, ranging from more Grand Tour-related content to separate clips posted on Engelsman and Holland's channel, Throttle House.

But what if that's not enough? What if — and I'm massively running before I can walk here — Amazon is so pleased with the trio that they want to commission a spinoff?

Clarkson's Farm is the blueprint that immediately springs to mind (for obvious Jeremy Clarkson-based reasons), but according to the team, their spinoff would have to look like something else entirely.

"I don't know. I think Clarkson can't do Clarkson's Farm... that's what makes it so entertaining to watch," Engelsman jokes. "We would not be able to do the farm."

But that doesn't mean that they don't have ideas. In fact, leave it to TikTok star Bourgeois, who seems to be able to turn his hand to just about anything, to have a completely unexpected spinoff idea.

"I'd do the cafe at Queenstown Road Station. There's a business opportunity there," he explains. "The aperture where the tickets would be sold as you go into the station is still there. So I don't know why it isn't utilised to sell coffee through there too. Then there's a disused platform at Queenstown Road Station that could then be the outdoor coffee veranda with a view of the railway."

If you've ever wanted to meet Bourgeois and hoped he would be exactly like he seems online, hopefully this exchange confirms that as the truth. Stick this concept on BBC 2 or Channel 5, and I'd be lapping it up like there's no tomorrow.

"This is our retirement plan," Holland laughs. "Maybe it could be a joint venture. Don't tell her anymore about it... this is our new business."

In all seriousness, I think we'd be waiting for years if a trio spinoff were to be announced. Instead, let's hope that The Grand Tour will be renewed for more seasons... my fingers are crossed.

Almost every modern TV show suffers from a mid-season lag, and I'm starting to think that Reacher season 4 is the next victim.

Not only has Amazon been pushing the political espionage plot hard, completely changing the tone and feel of the show altogether, but some are arguing that Reacher (Alan Ritchson) himself has become a muscly husk of a man... and I'm inclined to agree.

Still, we've got two more episodes this season for him to hopefully rediscover his spark. So, when does Reacher season 4 episode 7 arrive on Prime Video?

Interestingly, the Reacher season 4 finale coincides with the day that all episodes of spinoff Neagley will arrive on Prime Video.

Our double-episode Casualty special for its 40th anniversary is now streaming on BBC iPlayer, and I'm still recovering from the emotional whiplash.

From the hospital explosion in its opening minutes, the drama is operating with a full-force gusto we've rarely seen in the show. There's no longer one main storyline with smaller ones unfolding in the background — which is the usual Casualty format — but a gigantic story that involves absolutely everybody.

Nobody is overlooked or left behind, and all cylinders are firing. Whether we're in the heart of the hospital with Dylan (William Beck) as he struggles with the overwhelming influx or patients, or in makeshift emergency rooms with Flynn (Olly Rix) and Stevie (Elinor Lawless), the intensity never lets up.

But even with all of this chaos going on, I can't help but think that Flynn and Stevie would make a beautiful couple... if it was something that they wanted.

With an underlying tension already between them, is this something that we're ever going to see? If Rix's response is anything to go by, we can remain cautiously optimistic.

'There is a real depth to their relationship'

"To some extent, the answer to that is quite a simple in that it's not my decision," Rix explains. "That's one for the producers. But I think there's something there that they're the last to see.

"The audience has seen it. The producers and the writers have seen it. I think it's sort of been there from the off, and it's taken a moment like this to reorientate them, and perhaps to get them to realise that there is a real depth to that relationship. I think there's a lot more to come... I'll say that much."

I think Rix is right. There's nothing quite like a life-threatening tragedy to bring two people together in a way they've never been before — I mean, how many romantic dramas have based their premise on this exact idea?

The truth is that if Flynn and Stevie do end up together, their romance will likely be incredibly drawn-out, leaving us kept waiting for the slow-burn to materialize into something more.

For now, at least, we've got the great chemistry between the two actors. "Ellie and I work very nicely together anyway and we've always improvised well," Rix adds. "We're quite free in the way we do scenes together, and that was encouraged and embraced in the filming of these specials. I had a great time. I hope it shows."

After that explosive season 2 finale, I think I'd have rioted on the streets if Netflix didn't renew The Gentlemen season 3.

As we said in our season 2 review, it's still up there with the best TV that Netflix has to offer. Think more of what we want, but the shock factor is now off the scale... and I don't think that this is going to change any time soon.

With Eddie (Theo James) breaking away from Susie (Kaya Scodelario) and Bobby (Ray Winstone) to work directly alongside Mafia crime boss Marco (Sergio Castellitto), he's still reeling from his incredibly short-lived marriage to Bella (Benedetta Porcaroli).

The fallout has involved Freddy (Daniel Ings) in the most disturbing of ways (more on that below), and the setup for season 3 couldn't be any more delicious.

Frankly, I need new episodes like it was yesterday. But what do we actually know about The Gentlemen season 3's arrival on Netflix?

The Gentlemen season 3 release window predictions

At the moment, we've got no confirmation of when The Gentlemen season 3 will even begin filming, let alone when we might see it on screens. Because of this, I think we're looking at a 2028 release date, at the very earliest.

This also follows the current release schedule pattern, with season 1 debuting in 2024 and season 2 following up two years after.

Creator and director Guy Ritchie says, “The ambition of The Gentlemen has accelerated, the world has expanded, and the consequences carry weight.

"A third season felt inevitable, and I’m looking forward to pushing the boundaries of it further.”

The Gentlemen season 3 trailer: is there one?

Don't be silly. It took us until the end of August 2026 to get one for season 2, so expect the first full trailer to arrive around two weeks before the third season does.

The Gentlemen season 3 plot predictions

Spoilers for The Gentlemen season 2 ahead.

While nothing has been confirmed, we can make some educated guesses based on what's already happened.

By the end of season 2 family dynamics between... well, everyone, are incredibly up in the air. The relationship between brothers Eddie and Freddy is now in its strangest place yet, and it would be fair to assume that there's no legitimate trust between them — even if things feel more 'even', so to speak.

Does Freddy become a lapdog for Marco, if Eddie's allegiance stays with him? Does Freddy rebel if Eddie is so intent of having control over him? And do Sabrina or Geoff intervene either way?

Then there's Eddie's relationship with Susie and Bobby, which is bound to change again now that Bobby has bought the debt. Now that things are smoothed over with Susie, it makes sense that the trio will find their way back to each other... somehow.

It goes without saying that new faces, enemies and drama will be knocking on season 3's door, but for now, all we can do is wait and find out.

All right everyone, back to the Toledo Truth Teller we go. It's been a year since we last saw the gang, and surprisingly, not too much has changed in The Paper season 2.

Editor-in-Chief Ned (Domhnall Gleeson) is still desperately searching for the stories that will take his team to the next level, while Esmeralda (Sabrina Impacciatore) rarely thinks about anybody's reputation but her own. Nicole (Ramona Young) is still giving Kelly Kapoor vibes in a majorly inferior way, while Mare (Chelsea Frei)... well, she's just trying her best.

Okay, so maybe there are a few big changes, but you'll have to wait to find out what they are. So, when does The Paper season 2 land on Peacock?

The Mandalorian and Grogu (Disney+)

I'll be honest: I wasn't a fan of The Mandalorian and Grogu. Indeed, I stated as much in my review of The Mandalorian and Grogu ahead of its theatrical debut in late May. But, hey, now that it's out on Disney+, you can decide for yourself whether it's any good or not.

Set some time after The Mandalorian's third season, the Star Wars film sees Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his diminutive protégé enlisted by The New Republic to help the Twins, aka the Huttese heads of Shakari's crime syndicate, rescue the latter's nephew Jotta (voiced by Jeremy Allen White). Of course, things aren't as simple as that and the pair soon find themselves embroiled in a criminal conspiracy. — TP

The Gentlemen season 2 (Netflix)

We've got a double hit of Theo James in the list this week, but The Gentlemen season 2 is far and away my favorite. With the Glass family business back and booming the groundwork is set for a Shakespearean level of drama that's tinged with signature Guy Ritchie-style brutality to unfold. But whatever you think that looks like, times it by 100, and add in a chainsaw.

Through shrewd editing, handwritten effects, sound and narrative structure, new episodes feel playful and unserious despite its often sombre and hard-hitting undertones, with Ritchie's tonal balance across it all being nothing short of impressive.

Clearly, the best way to deal with the bad things in life is to sprinkle in as much absurdity and humor as possible, and Ritchie never lets us forget that. — Jasmine Valentine, entertainment reporter

Mayday (Apple TV)

The above thumbnail almost makes it look as though Ryan Reynolds has decided to dramatize his Welcome to Wrexham journey, but I can confirm that new Apple TV movie Mayday is anything but.

As the name suggests, there are heavy military tones surrounding this one. In essence, a U.S. Navy pilot (Reynolds) on a top-secret mission during the Cold War gets trapped behind enemy lines, his only chance at survival is to form an alliance with an eccentric ex-KGB agent (Kenneth Branagh).

Honestly, it's just nice to see Branagh in front of the camera for a change, and I don't mean that as a sly diss to his Agatha Christie movies. His natural chemistry with Reynolds is exactly the mood-booster we need this week, and it's safe to say that you'll never look at the Cold War the same way again. — JV

Chad Powers season 2 (Hulu/Disney+)

Chad Powers is back! Glen Powell returns as the titular quarterback in disguise, but he's in a difficult situation when we pick up with him in season 2 of the Hulu series.

In the season 1 finale, coach Ricky (Perry Mattfeld) discovered that Chad is actually disgraced former quarterback Russ Holliday, and his disguise has finally been rumbled. With Ricky threatening to expose Chad aka Russ, his future with the South Georgia Catfish is uncertain.

It's great drama to enter the new season with. In a recent TechRadar interview with the Chad Powers cast, they revealed why their characters are so special to them. — Lucy Buglass, senior entertainment writer

The Runner (Prime Video)

You Gal Gadon't want to miss this week's new Prime Video movie, The Runner (sorry, I had to). In a nutshell, the actress plays a high-powered attorney who must race through London to save her abducted son while following cryptic commands from a mysterious caller.

Is this an original premise? No. Is it going to be the best action movie you've ever seen? Also no. But sometimes things have to be so bad that they're great, and there's genuinely something really enjoyable about that.

I've had enough of overly polished, slick and serious action dramas... give me something a little rougher around the edges any day of the week (and I guarantee you'll have a smile on your face by the end too). — JV

Scary Movie 6 (Paramount+)

Horror movies are known for having plenty of sequels, and it turns out that their parodies are no exception. Indeed, Scary Movie 6 is the latest installment in the comedy movie series, with the franchise returning after a 13 year break.

As always, the biggest horrors are parodied here such as Weapons, The Substance and Smile, as well as a recurring parody of Wes Craven's Scream series.

Unfortunately, it performed poorly and received a 24% Rotten Tomatoes rating, though the audience's verdict was more favorable at 64%. So you'll have to watch to decide which side of the debate you fall on. — LB

Fuze (HBO Max)

HBO Max's new movie is a great weekend watch for anyone wanting a fast paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

In Fuze, a high-stakes London heist uses the chaos of a mass city evacuation as its cover, so we're following two events at once. A heist is taking place whilst the city is spooked by an unexploded World War II bomb, with the criminals hoping that local law enforcement will be too distracted to apprehend them.

The movie stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Sam Worthington, but in my Fuze review I noted that it does seem to waste its all-star cast. Still, it's highly entertaining. — LB

Contains spoilers for Alice and Steve season 1

Don't worry Alice and Steve fans, the Hulu (Disney+ internationally) show is not leaving us on a cliffhanger. It's been renewed for another round, so rest assured, we should get some of those burning (no pun intended...) questions answered.

When we last saw everyone, they were in the middle of a chaotic wedding venue fire. In intense scenes, Alice saved Steve and jumped off the roof into a pool with him, with their fates left unknown. Even though Alice was furious that Steve was marrying her daughter, she still risked her life to help save his.

With a finale like that, we should all breathe a sigh of relief that we'll get to see what happens next. And by the sounds of things, we won't be disappointed.

Speaking of the renewal, Sophie Goodhart, creator and writer, said: “I am so thrilled that Alice and Steve has been given a second season. No one will be prepared for what happens next, especially not Alice and Steve.”

Alice and Steve season 2 trailer: is there one?

No, it's too early for a trailer yet, but I'll keep you updated once one is available.

If I had to speculate, the trailer should immediately pick up after the fire, where we can hopefully learn the fates of those caught up in it. I really can't wait, I need to know if everyone made it out alive...

Alice and Steve season 2 story synopsis and speculation

Considering season 1's cliffhanger, it's likely the fire will be a key focus at least for the first episode of season 2. The scene cut to black before we could see if Alice and Steve made it out of the venue alive, so we really need to learn what happened to them.

If that wasn't enough drama, there's so much more. Izzy is pregnant, initially believing it was Steve's. As it happens, the baby's father is her ex, Yannis, but Steve has insisted he still wants to be involved in the child's life. But something tells me it won't quite be this plain sailing, especially if Izzy's ex arrives back on the scene.

We haven't seen Yannis on screen yet, so there's a chance he could become a new, problematic character when season 2 picks up.

Regardless of whether you're into cars or not, talking about them on TV is synonymous with three people: Richard Hammond, James May and Jeremy Clarkson.

The trio transitioned to Amazon's The Grand Tour after parting ways with BBC's Top Gear, and now the time has come for them to hand the presenting baton over on Prime Video, too.

Frankly, I don't think The Grand Tour could have picked a better set of replacements, those replacements being James Engelsman, Thomas Holland (both of YouTube channel Throttle House fame) and train TikTok superstar, Francis Bourgeois.

I've been surprised and impressed by how well the trio work together in a TV format, particularly considering they were quickly written off as mere content creators when they were originally announced. But both in the announcement video and ever since, Clarkson has been their biggest champion.

In fact, Clarkson has taken it upon himself to hand The Grand Tour reins over to the new trio in the best way possible — and both on and offscreen, they say that's been "surreal."

'He'd watched our YouTube videos and seen Francis' TikToks'

"It's everything. It's biggest thing, I think, right?" Holland says about having Clarkson's seal of approval.

Engelsman adds, "It was weird, though. When we first found out that he knew who we were, it was a bit surreal. He'd like watched some of our YouTube stuff and he'd seen Francis' TikToks. What did he say to us at dinner?

Bourgeois responds, "He said, 'I know you think that I'm old, but I actually pay attention.' He told me 'You're the train guy.' To find out that he that watching was a surreal moment."

But if you've already watched episode 1, you'll know this wasn't all. The opening scene shows our new trio pitch up at Clarkson's Cotswolds pub, The Farmer's Dog, and enter his onsite butcher and bottle shop, Hops & Chops.

They've come to ask Clarkson for The Grand Tour tent, which the star repurposed for the shop after they original trio finished filming. Clarkson tells him that it's clearly being used, and they if they were to use even a corner, they'd "have less of an audience, and more just customers."

The three leave citing that they are "homeless," while Clarkson turns to the camera to tell viewers that he's been watching what they've been up to for the previous year and a half. "You're going to love this," he signs off with.

"From there, it was kind of ramped up to him doing what he saw in episode 1," Holland continues. "Especially when we'd heard that he'd watched one of the other episodes. He loved it.

"We were like, 'Who paid you?'" Engelsman adds. "He'd been quite happy with it. He tweeted that the new presenters can't be a celebrity, have to be car enthusiasts, all sort of stuff. We were like, 'Okay.'.. but we passed his tweet test."

Can you actually get a bigger or better endorsement than that? I doubt it.

When I spoke to new presenting trio James Engelsman, Francis Bourgeois and Thomas Holland about their debut on The Grand Tour, I admitted that I am an absolute dunce when it comes to cars. Are they prepared to impart wisdom to idiots like me? "Well, did you enjoy it [the series]?" Engelsman asks me. When I reply yes, he says "That's all that matters."

In a nutshell, this is what I think we need to keep coming back to now that Prime Video has revamped its hit car show. Not everybody is going to be thrilled with the changes, and understandably so — original presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are the absolute lifeblood of the concept. But at the end of the day, no single person can sustain a light entertainment show forever.

And light entertainment The Grand Tour is. None of the core sections of the show have been altered, with our new trio still galivanting across the world in expensive supercars, or doing something stupid like sticking parts of a classic school bus to a microcar. If chaos is what you're tuning in for, it hasn't gone anywhere.

Neither, in a way, have the original trio. Amazon has shrewdly been able to include their spirit and legacy in a way that doesn't overshadow the authority of the new presenters (no spoilers here, though), and the new six episodes feel like the perfect homage to everything that has come before.

Do I miss Clarkson, Hammond and May having the run of resources and Amazon budget? Without question. But just because something has changed doesn't inherently make it worse.

Don't write our new hosts of The Grand Tour off as mere 'content creators'

If, like me, you're chronically online but don't fall into any type of niche content, you might only recognize one of the three faces above. Bourgeois went viral on TikTok for his (frankly, nerdy) love of trains, but the internet was won over by his wholesome charm. As luck would have it, his love and understanding of cars is almost as strong as a high-carbon steel train track.

But our other two presenters shouldn't be overlooked. Engelsman and Holland are the creators of popular car YouTube channel Throttle House. Fans have dubbed it "the spiritual successor to Top Gear for years," and with a similar blend of fun and smarts, it's easy to see why. They even had Hammond on in a cameo role years before any of the TV stuff took off.

For the trio to be asked to take over feels somewhat written in the stars, particularly as more traditional media formats are actively looking to capitalize on the success of online influencers. However, TV and content creation are two entirely different disciplines, and having an active social media presence doesn't automatically mean that you'll make a great presenter.

Yes, there are bouts of awkwardness, stilted banter and hesitant connection, but there's a great deal of promise in the three as a newly-formed team. There's an underlying ease between them that proves why they were brought together, and their expansive love for all things transport is all the glue that they really need. In time, they'll clearly be seasoned, and I don't think they'll need much help to get them to that level.

Yes, I still miss the original team — I can't help it

I'm desperate to talk about — but won't, at least here — the ways that Prime Video has incorporated the essence of Clarkson, Hammond and May into The Grand Tour's new episodes, but you're just going to have to see it to believe it. It's a mixture of passing the baton onto a new generation, and knowing there's a huge chance that viewership will drop if they're not somehow included.

The meat of the show, from the global car trips to sheer stupidity, acts as a constant, regardless of who is presenting. Our new boys might not be as hilariously mean to each other as the originals were, but the spirit of just being idiots on the telly hasn't died out. Who is involved here almost doesn't matter, because you're so wrapped up in the possibility of that being you. I hate driving, but I still want to try out a supercar on the palm tree-laden streets of Malaysia.

Ultimately, The Grand Tour's revamp is as successful as it ever could have been. Nothing has been compromised, yet everything subtly feels different... in a positive way. A particular shoutout must go to Bourgeois, who I think is easily the strongest of the bunch. His combination of deep-dive intellect and soft-spoken delivery will make him the James May of tomorrow, and I can't help but feel immensely proud of that.

If we're being honest, Amazon could have picked absolutely anybody to host the new season of The Grand Tour on Prime Video. From a random but established presenter who is trying something off-brand to a complete unknown fresh from a internship — you name it, they could have had the job.

But for two of our three new faces, their casting in the new series feels incredibly predetermined. James Engelsman and Thomas Holland, the creators of the popular car YouTube channel Throttle House, have been dubbed by fans as the "spiritual successor to Top Gear" for years.

Obviously Top Gear and The Grand Tour aren't mutually exclusive, but thanks to Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, the latter was born from the former. If you scroll back through two years' worth of Throttle House content, you'll even find that Hammond had a starring cameo.

Amazingly, Holland and Engelsman's first meeting for The Grand Tour job came just days after the above video was released — though the pair insists that one has nothing to do with the other.

'We thought we were walking into a wall of knives'

"That first initial meeting was literally right after that," Engelsman tells me about the Hammond YouTube cameo. "We just about had an idea [of the job] at that point. We had no idea what it was, really, or any detail consciousness. [The cameo] was completely separate. That was fun coming out."

Even so, it set a chain of events in motion that fate itself couldn't have timed better. And who doesn't love seeing Hammond involved in an informally formatted car show? It's almost like he knows what he's doing.

But now that YouTube clips have effectively soft-launched the pair's TV presenting partnership with train TikTok creator Francis Bourgeois, how do they feel about the fan reaction so far?

"We try not to read every single comment.... while reading every single comment," Holland jokes. "The sense of it is good. Obviously, when the show comes out, that is when it matters.

Engelsman adds, "We really thought we were walking into a wall of knives up until the moment the show comes out, but people have been a lot better than I thought, honestly. The call is good. They're a good bunch.

"At its core, it's people who just enjoy cars, and I think that more people than we expected are ready to simply enjoy more car content," Holland agrees.

Luckily for them, all six episodes of The Grand Tour are ready to drop on Prime Video on September 4, so the wait is almost over.

Does every existing IP need a movie adaptation? The answer is no, of course, but I'm quietly confident in the upcoming live-action version of hit Hideo Kojima franchise, Death Stranding.

Why? Well, let's start with the concept. In the game, courier Sam must reconnect a broken America after an apocalyptic event merged the worlds of the living and the dead. Add in distributor A24 and the man who directed Pig and The Death of Robin Hood — which is now in UK cinemas after its June US release — and you've surely got gold.

However, there's one immediate snag. While we don't know much, we do know that the new movie won't follow the same premise as the existing Death Stranding games.

In fact, according to director Michael Sarnoski, not only is it a standalone movie, but will be made with a lot of creative freedom — and something about the way he explains this makes me nervous.

'I need the space to find authorship and find the things that I really believe in'

"I actually like to make things difficult for myself," Sarnoski tells me. "I like to do projects where the initial instinct is 'Oof, that could be a really bad idea.' Another Robin Hood movie? A prequel to a horror franchise? I like things where it could be easy to miss the mark."

This in itself is a concerning statement. I prefer it when my movie directors don't go into an adaptation thinking that things could potentially go horribly wrong. Whatever happened to positive mental attitude?

"I like the challenge," he continues. "I like finding the humanity in things that otherwise could not work. On Death Stranding, they're giving me a lot of freedom to tell the story that I want to tell separate from the core video game stories. It's its own standalone thing. I need the space to find authorship and find the things that I really believe in... I'm really excited about it."

Playing devil's advocate here, creative freedom could be a good thing. If fans expect a movie to replicate its original source material exactly, nobody ends up winning. But with so few details to go on, we've got to keep our fingers crossed that good decisions are made in the meantime.

But is Sarnoski concerned about appealing to existing fanbases, or is he happy to stick to his guns? "A little bit of both," he responds. "I feel the pressure, but I have to set that aside and focus on what creatively excites me. I can't make stuff as a reaction to what I think someone else wants — it has to come from a place of love and fascination."

Make of that what you will, folks... and watch this space.

The trailer for Apple TV's Being Heumann is here, and the new movie has the potential to follow in CODA's footsteps when it streams on November 13.

Despite being one of the best streaming services, Apple TV is more well known for its original series like Severance, Pluribus and Widow's Bay, but historically it has been lacking when it comes to its movies.

All except for CODA, which won Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars in 2022. Following on from CODA's huge success, director Sian Heder returns with Being Heumann.

This new movie follows the life of Disability Rights Activist Judith Heumann, where she fought tirelessly to improve society so disabled people could live more independently, and pushed back against discrimination.

Ruth Madeley stars as Judith Heumann, while Mark Ruffalo plays Joseph Califano, who was the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare for the Jimmy Carter Administration. Califano often stood against the demands of the disability rights movement.

One notable event that will appear in the movie sees Heumann leading the 504 Sit-In, where over 100 disabled people came together for a 28-day sit-in at the San Francisco Federal Building, making it the longest sit-in at a federal building.

A great supporting cast for Being Heumann includes names like Dylan O’Brien, Will Brill, Michael Patrick Thornton, Antwan Tolliver, Rein Barcel, Charlie Rush-Reese, and Rob Delaney.

Being Heumann premieres at TIFF before receiving a limited theatrical release on November 6. After that, it arrives on Apple TV on November 13.

Spoilers for The Gentlemen season 2 ahead.

If you weren't expecting The Gentlemen season 2 to return to Netflix with a bit of bite, then what were you thinking? Eddie (Theo James) is back, and he's on a heroic journey to transform from a domesticated cat into an untameable lion.

He's already broken away from Susie (Kaya Scodelario) and Bobby (Ray Winstone) to work directly alongside Mafia crime boss Marco (Sergio Castellitto), and that decision has helped ignite a new romance with Bella (Benedetta Porcaroli). In fact, it went so well that the pair got married in Italy in the space of only a few episodes.

But by the time we reach the penultimate episode of season 2, disaster strikes. By the time the pair are due to go on their honeymoon, Bella — who is travelling there via seaplane — dies in a plane crash, leaving brand-new husband Eddie bereft.

Convinced there's more to Bella's death than meets the eye, Eddie sets off on a path of vengeance to make her killer pay. This essentially makes The Gentlemen season 2 ending a full story on its own, so let's go through exactly what happened before season 3 starts production.

Eddie is convinced Bobby Glass is behind Bella's death

The Gentlemen season 2 starts off with a weeping Eddie being consoled by Marco during Bella's funeral in Italy, but there's a burning hate in his eyes. Back in the UK, Eddie tortures one of the 'soldiers' found transporting weapons into the Duke's estate at the same time as Bella's plane crashed, with Geoff (Vinnie Jones) having killed the rest of them.

Considering the unnamed man has a car battery clamped to his testicles (that basically electrocutes his nether regions), he's only too happy to give over the name Eddie wants to hear: Bobby. Clearly coerced into saying whatever Eddie wants, Eddie decided who was responsible before he even began this round of torture.

After their tense words at the wedding, things aren't exactly amicable between him and Susie. With Marco's help, Eddie is able to get information on Bobby and a gun to an Italian hitman without Susie knowing... but she's too busy trying to get to the bottom of what has happened herself.

She turns up at the house while Charlotte's (Jasmine Blackborow) partner Nanny (Benjamin Clementine) is telling Eddie he wants to move to an unused house on the Sandringham estate to protect his wife and child, Tarquin. Eddie allows Susie in, but has a marksman trained on her while the pair walk through the grounds.

Susie says that she initially believed that Bobby was responsible, but learned that Bobby bought the £100 million debt Eddie owes to Stan (Giancarlo Esposito). "There's a hundred million reasons why my dad wants you alive," she adds, though neither of them are quite sure why Bobby has made this move.

Stan's sellout changes everything

Eddie brings Susie to the man being tortured, who also falsely claims that he met Susie, further confirming that she's telling the truth. Eddie eventually rings Stan to ask if he sold the debt, which he confirms.

It's then a race to stop the hitman, who is already on his way to Bobby in order to kill him. We see Bobby approach his infamous sauna just before the hitman arrives, but thankfully Eddie has made it in time to stop the worst from happening. Together, they kill the hitman with only so much as a few words spoken between them.

While patching her dad up, Susie and Bobby discuss his decision to buy the debt. While Susie sees the grieving Duke as "unstable," Bobby thinks he's at a turning point. The death of his wife will serve as the motivation Eddie needs to fully trust in, and take control of, himself.

Eddie then pays a visit to Stan, who uses an overly complex religious analogy to explain a similar thinking to Bobby: both are giving Eddie the tools he needs to come into his own power. For the time being at least, Eddie seems too preoccupied by his own self-destructive need for vengeance to really take this onboard.

Freddy outs himself being behind Bella's death

We then cut to Freddy (Daniel Ings) who phones Lady Sabrina (Joley Richardson) out of the blue to ask if "everyone is okay." He explains that he has had "vivid dreams" recently that indicate someone is hurt or in trouble, with Sabrina confirming the news of Bella's death.

Meanwhile, Geoff's new "carrot and stick" approach to the tortured man means he's found out new information: he claims to have a phone number to phone his boss in case of emergencies. Eddie tells him to make a call as if his mission has been successful, asking to exchange Tarquin, who has been repeatedly used as bait (metaphorically) for money. A text message in response suggests the number was bogus, leading to Eddie shooting the man in the head.

Susie assures Eddie that they'll find the culprit together, but a quiet dinner with Sabrina, where she relays the phone call she had with Freddy, redirects Eddie's suspicions to him. He tells Marco his theory, but also claims that this isn't something that Freddy would have been capable of doing without outside help.

Eddie makes Gospel John pay for what Freddy has done — at Freddie's own hands

At once of his group services, henchman Errol (John McGrellis) tells Gospel John (Pearce Quigley) that Mr. Vargas (Cosimo Fusco), a "producer," wants to meet them. A meeting is arranged at an airport-bound warehouse, which essentially means that it is not officially considered to be UK territory.

A four-walled office is set up in the middle of the empty warehouse, with Vargas only allowing Errol and John inside. The rest of John's henchmen are taken out by snipers when all of the lights suddenly cut out, turning back on to reveal Eddie and Susie walking through a heap of bodies.

Susie and Vargas leave Eddie to speak to John, having shot Errol in the head for refusing to sit down. John confirms that he was Freddy's help in killing Bella, claiming that this cycle of revenge started when Eddie took out John's brother back in season 1.

John claims that he's been “doing God’s work” since, and sees the introduction of Freddy in his life as the Lord replacing the brother that he has lost. Now, he is helping Freddy get back “what was taken from him," which includes the family's underground drug empire. Surprisingly, Eddie leaves with John still alive.

Back at the manor, Sabrina begs Eddie not to take Freddie's actions out on him, citing that he is too mentally ill to know what he is properly doing. Eddie pays Freddy a visit where he is housed, taking him on a walk of the grounds. When they are far away enough from the grounds, Eddie confronts him, saying he knows exactly what Freddy has done.

Freddy denies being involved, but Eddie beats him to a pulp regardless. A black van arrives when Eddie puts a gun to Freddy's head, but refuses to fire when Freddie pleads for his life. Instead, he throws the van doors open to reveal a gagged and bound John, gesturing that Freddy must get in and kill John with a chainsaw one of his men is holding.

The door closes and screams are heard as Eddie turns away. The door reopens shortly afterwards, with a bloodied, screaming Freddy holding John's severed head. "Good boy," Eddie tells him before the scene closes out.

Season 3 predictions

As you can tell, family dynamics between the Halsteads are incredibly up in the air at the moment. The relationship between brothers Eddie and Freddy is now in its strangest place yet, and it would be fair to assume that there's no legitimate trust between them — even if things feel more "even," so to speak.

Does Freddy become a lapdog for Marco, if Eddie's allegiance stays with him? Does Freddy rebel if Eddie is so intent of having control over him? And do Sabrina or Geoff intervene either way?

Then there's Eddie's relationship with Susie and Bobby, which is bound to change again now that Bobby has bought the debt. Now that things are smoothed over with Susie, it makes sense that the trio will find their way back to each other... somehow.

It goes without saying that new faces, enemies and drama will be knocking on season 3's door, but for now, all we can do is wait and find out.

When I spoke to star Theo James a few months ago for Sky TV movie Fuze, he teased that The Gentlemen season 2 would be "even darker" than its Netflix debut. At the time, I wrote this off as something he might say simply to create buzz and a good headline — but it turns out, he wasn't kidding.

I think that it takes a lot to shock the modern viewer, given how immediately exposed we are to everything in the world thanks to social media. Somehow, The Gentlemen season 2 (which is out now) manages exactly that, and I spent a good deal of time while watching its eight episodes with my mouth wide open.

The sense of crazed chaos established in its first season, which debuted back in 2024, is only heightened, which in itself feels like an extraordinary feat. If you strip it back, Eddie (James) is following the classic 'chosen one' archetypal storyline, but his unhinged family and work colleagues add layers of deranged complexity... and a fair few obstacles along the way.

Eddie is still working directly with Susie (Kaya Scodelario) and Bobby (Ray Winstone) as the action picks back up, but the trio's new business partners come in the form of an Italian crime network. Cue some questionable under-the-table deals, alliances and betrayal, and a tiger kept in a questionably small cage.

At the Halstead manor, things aren't exactly quiet either. Freddy (Daniel Ings) has been quietly sent to a rehab centre while Lady Sabrina (Joely Richardson) tentatively tries to keep him in check from a distance. Bobby's decision-making takes on a more spiritual approach, while Susie genuinely seems like the only person around with her head screwed on.

The groundwork is set, then, for a Shakespearean level of drama that's tinged with signature Guy Ritchie-style brutality to unfold. But whatever you think that looks like, times it by 100, and add in a chainsaw.

The Gentlemen season 2's darker storylines are the ideal step forward — and make for a tasty season 3 setup

It's odd to think of The Gentlemen season 1 as superficial or even jovial, but compared to season 2, that's how it feels in hindsight. Without giving the game away, new episodes are integral to Eddie's development, transforming him from a criminal network cog into a brutish, no-nonsense leader.

Because we already know that season 3 has been renewed, the only clear path for The Gentlemen to follow is charting the rise of Eddie's own illegal underground empire, or at least his individual role within that world. Susie describes him as a dog desperate to be free of his leash in episode 1, and by episode 8, there really is no turning back.

In essence, the brutal underbelly that we've always known was there — both in the wider network and within Eddie himself — comes to the surface. Whether it's mental manipulation, underhand strategy or outright physical force, everyone should be scared of what is actually capable of happening... including Eddie.

For us, that means getting stuck into scene after scene of wildly outlandish chaos. People die in ways that I didn't actually think people could die, cruelty and deception translate into delicious onscreen tension, and where do I even begin with the physical and emotional torture? Ball-achingly good, to put it one way.

It's no surprise that Jame and his gaggle of core co-stars are as impeccably brilliant as they always have been, and it's a relief to know that each person involved in The Gentlemen can be so solidly relied on. But at the same time, a huge shoutout must go to our new cast members, none of whom feel at all out of place.

Hugh Bonneville's eccentric aristocrat feels like Downton Abbey on acid, and is worth tuning in for alone. First-time actors Maya Jama and Chris Eubank Jr. are astounding in a completely different way, never letting their lack of experience get in the way of a convincing performance. They're somewhat playing fictional versions of themselves (or at least share characteristics), but still: credit where credit is due.

Style and satisfaction are still number 1 priorities

The more of The Gentlemen season 2 you see, the more you perversely want to watch, yet the best way to describe a single episode is that it feels like a sumptuous feast. You feel full digesting one, able to sit apart as a full, complete story.

I like the fact that the Netflix show feels so rich that you don't — or perhaps can't — binge it all in one go, and the devil really is in the detail. Given how heavy-handed the streamer usually is with how its TV shows look (read: they all look the same), The Gentlemen is able to adhere to this while being incredibly stylish at the same time.

Through shrewd editing, handwritten effects, sound and narrative structure, new episodes feel playful and unserious despite its often sombre and hard-hitting undertones, with Ritchie's tonal balance across it all being nothing short of impressive. Clearly, the best way to deal with the bad things in life is to sprinkle in as much absurdity and humor as possible, and Ritchie never lets us forget that.

Do parts wane in interest and have pacing issues? Absolutely, but what modern TV show doesn't suffer from that? In fact, I doubt that The Gentlemen season 2 actually cares about this: it exists in the world with wanton abandon, and you're going to like it however it's packaged, or else.

East of Eden has a trailer, and I'm feeling optimistic about Netflix's take on John Steinbeck's novel. We don't have long to wait either, as the series arrives on October 1.

The original East of Eden novel is considered to be Steinbeck’s most ambitious novel. Spanning 600 pages, it follows the intertwined histories of two families: the Hamiltons and the Trasks, documenting their lives from the American Civil War to the end of World War I.

Florence Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, who marries Adam Trask (Christopher Abbott), and I'm already excited for Pugh's take on the iconic literary villain. Cathy hides behind a charming exterior, but beneath it all, she's manipulative and destroys people's lives for fun and profit.

Take a look at the East of Eden trailer below to see how Cathy worms her way into the Trask family.

East of Eden will have seven episodes and was created by Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 movie adaptation starring James Dean.

Pugh and Abbott are joined by a great supporting cast, including Joseph Zada and Joe Anders as the Trask twins, Cal and Aron, and Ciaran Hinds as Samuel, the head of the Hamilton family, whose lives become linked with the Trasks.

The series will explore many of the book's major plot points, such as Cathy abandoning her sons, which is a huge catalyst for their differing personalities. Cal believes he's "evil" like his mother, and Aron invents an angelic, idealized version of his mother to cope.

I'm interested to see if the series will deviate from the book in any way, but based on the trailer, it seems pretty close so far. We'll have to wait and see how it's received when it's released next month.

I shouldn't still be on the fence about a show's existence as it enters its second season, but here we are. The Paper season 2 returns to Peacock on September 9 — but out of its 10 new episodes, I'd say that only half are worth watching.

Why? Because The Office spinoff is still suffering from the same overarching issue as it did in season 1: everything is just that little bit underwhelming. Exactly a year after we left the writers of the Toledo Truth Teller, not much has changed in terms of the big picture.

Editor-in-Chief Ned (Domhnall Gleeson) is still desperately searching for the stories that will take his team to the next level, while Esmeralda (Sabrina Impacciatore) rarely thinks about anybody's reputation but her own. Nicole (Ramona Young) is still giving Kelly Kapoor vibes in a majorly inferior way, while Mare (Chelsea Frei)... well, she's just trying her best.

Without giving anything away, there are enough major dramatic plot points to steer the drama away from journalists despairing in an office. However, some of these are short-lived, and worse, give off trying-too-hard energy.

In Mean Girls, Regina George tells Gretchen Wieners to "stop making fetch happen. It's not going to happen," and I almost want to shake Peacock by the shoulders and explain that the same thing is happening here. The Paper season is being forced into existence, rather than having having a natural evolution.

Still, you can grab laughs where you can in some places, but for Brits, there's a lot more reason to be smiling. Tim Key and Gbemisola Ikumelo are easily the strongest players in this wayward cast, and they alone would be enough reason for me to keep watching if season 3 is given the green light.

The Paper season 2 is trying (and mostly failing) to make fetch happen

I think we can all agree that The Paper is far more similar to Parks and Recreation than it ever has been to The Office. This awkward resemblance only becomes more noticeable in season 2, as Ned's eagerness to become a pillar of the community (which incidentally seems to hate him) only increases.

I think the key difference here is how easy and natural the camaraderie, and sense of community, comes in Parks and Rec. None of that is genuine in The Paper, to the point where I'm almost rooting for Ned to fail. With the exception of Esmeralda, everyone is better off spending their time elsewhere — something that is directly explored as season 2 continues.

Some fans have critiqued The Paper's 10-episode bursts, arguing that seasons should rival the 25 episodes a piece we used to get for such shows back in the glory days of the early 2000s. However, I'd argue that the season already struggles to fill those 10 episodes, with some feeling like stagnant filler content in between the more intriguing storylines.

I can also see how Esmeralda was so divisive in season 1, and in bad news for critics, I think creators have doubled down on her grating personality traits this year. From the moment episode 1 kicks off, her extroverted vanity is on display in full force, and it hits pantomime levels of performance.

While there are points in season 2 where I enjoy this, her temperament does risk overshadowing the rest of the ensemble cast... and I've come away wishing that I felt a more invested in their stories as a result.

Tim Key Supremacy

But never fear! There are two heroes in our midst in the form of Tim Key and Gbemisola Ikumelo. Where Esmeralda is spiralling into chaos, Key's character Ken is the only one able to use this to his advantage. Esmeralda becomes the sidekick in their compelling (and genuinely hilarious) double act, which hits its peak between episodes 2 and 3.

A sharp, witty British man who is always armed with thinly-veiled criticism is exactly what this show needs, and Key plays his part to perfection. In fact, his scenes made me feel ashamed that I'd forgotten how good a comedic actor he is — since The Ballad of Wallis Island, I'd filed him in the director directory part of my brain.

Then there's Ikumelo. I couldn't believe that this quietly sassy and genius American accountant was the same woman who found Diane Morgan's fake farts on Last One Laughing UK season 2 so funny that she screamed her tears out. Metamorphosis is an incredible (and incredibly rare) skill to have as an actor, meaning she should never be underestimated. Now she just needs more bookings on UK comedy shows, please.

I know I may have made it sound like it's the case, but The Paper season 2 is far from the worst TV show, or comedy series, in 2026. But don't think it will be gracing my 'best of the year' lists, either.

Netflix has struggled in the thriller space recently. After The Last House disappointed me, I was hoping that The Whisper Man would restore my faith in the genre.

Unfortunately, the new Robert De Niro and Adam Scott led movie was another bitter disappointment. It had potential, but suffers from pacing issues and a predictable plot throughout. This was a frustrating experience for me because with a storyline like this, they could have included some smarter twists.

The Whisper Man follows grieving widower Tom Kennedy (Adam Scott), whose son Jake (Acston Luca Porto) is abducted after they move to a new town to start a new life. What was meant to be a fresh start turns into a living nightmare for Tom, who is desperate to find his son.

This desperation leads him to his estranged father, Peter Willis (Robert De Niro), from whom Tom has completely separated himself to the point they don't share a surname. Peter has never met his grandson, but after a panicked Tom arranges a meet with him he agrees to help track him down. Peter was once a detective, so has the resources and skillset that Tom needs to track down Jake.

The first act of the movie does feel promising. Jake's abduction is sudden and creepy, there's the family tensions to dive into, and I had hoped a good movie would follow. Unfortunately, it loses momentum fast and becomes quite predictable.

It also differs from the book in some ways, so those wanting to see a completely faithful adaptation might be left disappointed. Without spoiling it, some of the changes to the script annoyed me and I think it could've benefitted from following the book more accurately.

The Whisper Man has very good performances from its core cast, especially from De Niro and Scott. They did the best that they could with the script, but even their combined talent couldn't make this a better movie. Their father-son relationship is an interesting one but quite a lot of their reconnection felt rushed.

The story is focused on family, especially grief and loss, and I would've liked to learn more about what had happened between Peter and Tom. The few emotionally driven scenes we did get between them felt important, so I was frustrated that other, less important scenes seemed to drag on longer than they needed to.

Another great addition to the cast is Michael Keaton, who plays convicted serial killer Frank Carter, whom Peter helped to convict in the height of his days as a detective. Scenes between De Niro and Keaton are also well acted, providing a familiar interrogation scene that crime lovers never seem to tire of.

Unfortunately, The Whisper Man is another run of the mill thriller movie that doesn't offer anything new. It's an alright thriller to watch on a rainy day if you want a familiar, easy to follow story, but it won't satisfy viewers who are looking for twists, turns and unpredictability.

Is it just me, or is Taylor Sheridan's idea to have two simultaneous timelines in Lioness season 3 making the show harder to follow by the minute?

Over the course of the five episodes we've seen, the plot has followed Joe being kidnapped by unknown Russian operatives, and, the six months leading up to her capture. But with three episodes left to go, nothing is adhering to a traditional structure of revealing plot twists, and that's leaving my head scrambled.

September is upon us, and in many countries we'll be preparing for cold weather and cozy nights in front of the TV. If you're looking for a good horror movie for a night in, there's plenty across the best streaming services this month.

Indeed, the streaming giants have added more new movies to their libraries, whether you're in the mood for big new releases, indie horror gems, or classics you haven't watched in ages.

Here's seven horror titles that caught my eye in September 2026.

Carrie (1976)

When: September 1

Ahead of Mike Flanagan's Carrie series on Prime Video, why not watch the original Brian De Palma movie? I love revisiting this horror classic, based on Stephen King's first novel.

Here, Sissy Spacek plays the titular role opposite Piper Laurie's terrifying performance as Carrie's overbearing mother, Margaret. After suffering bullying from her classmates and abuse from her mother, Carrie finally snaps on prom night, resulting in one of horror's most iconic scenes.

Sinister 

When: September 1
Where: Hulu (US); Lionsgate+ (UK); Stan (AU)

Before he became The Grabber in The Black Phone, Ethan Hawke was being terrorized by a demonic presence. In Sinister, he plays a true crime writer who discovers snuff films and attempts to piece together what happened to the victims.

This is a very scary watch with some great jump scares, one of which is widely regarded as one of the best jump scares in modern horror. So if you want to be sleeping with the lights on, Sinister is a great movie to stream this month.

Ready or Not

Sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come recently landed on Disney+, so you could have yourself a double bill and check out the first movie now it's streaming across some of the best streaming services.

In Ready or Not, Grace (Samara Weaving) marries into a wealthy family who made their fortune making puzzles and games. On her wedding night, she is invited to play hide and seek as part of a tradition, but it soon turns out to be much more deadly than she'd expected and she ends up fighting to stay alive.

Parasomnia

When: September 4
Where: Shudder (US only)

It's not a horror round up without Shudder's latest offerings, and I'm so excited about Parasomnia. The new original movie follows Riley, a young woman haunted by severe night terrors and a traumatic childhood linked to a tragic past of murder-suicides.

She is plagued by recurring visions of a dungeon maze and a malevolent entity known as 'The Seer', and this is set to be a supernatural thrill ride I'm sure.

Heretic 

When: September 8
Where: Hulu (US); rent or buy (UK); Netflix (AU)

After seeing Hugh Grant in an A24 horror movie, I seriously want to see him in more scary titles going forward. In Heretic, he plays a manipulative intellectual man named Mr Reed, who lures two Mormon women into his home under false pretenses.

Once trapped, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) must try to survive and escape the house whilst he repeatedly "tests their faith". With some chilling monologues, this is not one to miss.

Bloody Tennis

When: September 25
Where: Shudder (worldwide)

If you thought Challengers was dramatic, wait until you see Bloody Tennis. This new Shudder exclusive movie follows a prestigious tennis academy where the brutality of competitive sports is taken to the extreme.

When newcomer Sophie arrives, the elite Southern European backdrop isn't at all what she expected and she finds herself surrounded by blood, gore, and she'll have to rely on her own survival instincts if she wants to get through the semester. Not your average school, then.

Backrooms

When: September 25
Where: HBO Max (US only)

Finally, Backrooms is making its streaming debut on HBO Max for US viewers. I've talked at length about why I love this movie in my five-star Backrooms review, but I'm happy to convince you why you should watch it once again.

Based on the Creepypasta phenomenon and Kane Parson's YouTube series, the movie follows down on his luck furniture salesman Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor) after he discovers that he can clip through a wall in the basement and enter the Backrooms, a terrifying, seemingly endless labyrinth that popularized the 'liminal space' subgenre. When Clark goes missing, his therapist Mary (Renate Reinsve) ventures in to try and find him. It's so good, I've watched it three times already.

Casualty fans, buckle up: two special episodes for its landmark 40th anniversary are heading to BBC and BBC iPlayer from September 5th.

If dealing with lots of ill people on a daily basis is bad enough, this new double-bill steps the drama up to levels we haven't seen in decades. Think The Pitt, if HBO Max decided to set it in South West England.

As you can tell from the below trailer our episodes are centered on a massive explosion strikes near the Clifton Suspension Bridge, plunging the city of Wyvern, and the hospital, into immediate chaos.

In the back of an ambulance, Stevie Nash (Elinor Lawless) and clinical lead Flynn Byron (Olly Rix) are caught in a race against time. Meanwhile, Dylan Keogh (William Beck) must lead the emergency department through its darkest hour... including facing his own personal tragedy.

Understandably, the 40th anniversary of Casualty is going to be a pretty intense watch. In fact, it could be so intense that you'll likely want to decompress by streaming something that's the polar opposite completely answer.

Luckily enough, I asked the Casualty cast for their ideas — and how they got through the on-set stress themselves — and the suggestions are genius.

'I've just finished Love Island'

"I've just finished Love Island... though I'm not sure if I want everyone knowing," Melanie Hill tells me. I hope she forgives me for including this, but it's such an unexpectedly fantastic choice that it actually makes complete sense.

Reality TV is often dubbed 'trash viewing,' treated as second-rate viewing because it's considered to be low-brow. The truth is the opposite — not only are most of the smartest women I know absolutely obsessed with it, but many shows offer fascinating insight into human social behavior and psychology. It's us at our best and worst, under glossy lights.

Frankly, Love Island is exactly the sort of show I'd choose to watch after watching people on death's door, even if it's only fictional. But if this isn't your thing, the suggestions don't stop there.

"I watched Shabaz Asks: Are Billionaires Bad? not too long ago," Neet Mohan adds. "It was a one-episode documentary by ShabazSays on TikTok. Was really funny. I also watched Pitch Perfect with my daughter... so there's that."

William Beck jokes, "I think if you want the complete opposite, go for snooker. But that's not very exciting, is it? Maybe even [children's show] Hey Duggee."

The good news is that three out of four of these TV show suggestions are readily available on BBC iPlayer, with Love Island currently on ITVX (or on Hulu in the US).

No matter what your jam is, you've got something ready to stream for free on the same platform... but come on, it's gotta be Love Island, right?

Lanterns episode 3 has been released on HBO Max — and, after two weeks of teasing, it finally pulls back the veil on the mysterious extraterrestrials known as the Guardians of the Universe.

Until now, the Guardians have been something of an enigma in the HBO TV Original. However, its latest chapter, titled 'OutKast', gives us a much clearer picture of these beings and why they want John Stewart to succeed Hal Jordan as Earth's Green Lantern.

So, who are they? Where did they come from? Do they have powers? What's their connection to the Green Lantern Corps? And why are they obsessed with Stewart replacing Jordan? Let's take a closer look at the Guardians' comic book history and role in this HBO Max sci-fi crime drama.

Who are the Guardians of the Universe in DC Comics?

Created by DC icons Gil Kane and Jeff Broome during the Silver Age of Comic Books, the Guardians of the Universe are an immortal alien race depicted as blue-skinned humanoids originally from the planet Maltus. However, after a time-bending experiment — one that leads to the birth of the DC Multiverse and the anti-matter universe — goes awry, the Maltusians relocated to a new world named Oa and rebranded themselves as the Guardians of the Universe.

The Guardians gave themselves a new objective following the aforementioned and ill-fated time-based test: combat evil and create an orderly universe.

With this goal in mind, they created sentient androids known as the Manhunters to patrol the universe and combat any threats they encounter. However, the Manhunters soon came to resent their creators, committed mass genocide in a harrowing event known as the Massacre of Sector-666, and later attempted a coup, which the Guardians quelled. For more on the Manhunters and their role in this show, read my Manhunters in Lanterns explained piece.

In the wake of the Manhunters' uprising, the Guardians started afresh and created the Green Lantern Corps. A new interstellar police agency, its members carry out the Manhunters' former duties of watching over the universe and tackling anyone who threatens the peace. Two Green Lanterns guard each of the 3,600 sectors that make up the known universe, meaning there are 7,200 space cops in total.

Abilities-wise, the Guardians are some of the most powerful beings in DC Comics. Their powerset includes — but isn't limited to — the ability to fly, time travel, and phase through objects; telepathy; astral projection; invulnerability to conventional weapons; energy manipulation; reality warping; size manipulation; omniscience; and force field projection.

When and why did the Guardians choose John Stewart to be Earth's next Green Lantern?

Now that we've learned about the Guardians' comic book history, let's see how they factor into the DC Universe (DCU) TV show's story.

For starters, when Stewart is interviewed by a Guardian named Lianna (played by Laura Linney) for the chance to become Jordan's successor, we quickly learn that there are only 11 Guardians left. There were 12, but as episode 2 revealed, the former Green Lantern known as Sinestro killed one of them. You can learn more about him via my Sinestro in Lanterns explained article.

Anyway, by way of Lanterns' flashback-heavy third episode, the Guardians had originally tried to recruit Stewart's father — aka John Stewart Sr — as Earth's first Green Lantern when Stewart Jr was a baby. However, Stewart Sr failed the Guardians' 'Are you afraid?' test, so he wasn't chosen.

Traumatized by that cosmic event, Stewart Sr becomes a danger to his loved ones, so he's kicked out of the family home by his wife Bernadette. She doesn't believe her husband's claims surrounding the aforementioned event, either — until Lianna unexpectedly shows up to apologize for the trouble that the Guardians caused the Stewart family.

To keep things brief, Lianna indicates — over a late-night cup of coffee — that Stewart Jr has the makings of being a future Green Lantern. The reason? His parents are formidable individuals, so it stands to reason that, based on his genetic make-up alone, Stewart Jr would be cut from the same cloth.

After Bernadette tells all of this to Stewart Sr, they decide to raise Stewart Jr to not only be fearless, but also groom him so he will become a Green Lantern when he's older. So begins a years-long mission that sees them treat their youngest son differently from his older siblings. They train him to be undaunted and brainwash him into thinking it's his destiny to be a Green Lantern.

A couple of decades later, Stewart Jr is — the emotional detachment issues born from his unique upbringing notwithstanding — well on his way to becoming the so-called 'chosen one', too.

As the saying goes, though, the best-laid plans often go awry. Now a decorated US Marine sniper, Stewart Jr is sent on a months-long mission to assassinate a prominent money launderer known as 'Gray Wolf' in the Kamchatka Peninsula. Long story short, he fails said assignment when Hal Jordan, who was eventually chosen as Earth's first Green Lantern, surprisingly arrives and arrests the highly sought-after criminal. Forced to take the blame as part of a government cover-up, Stewart Jr is dishonorably discharged by the military.

Dejected after seeing his chances of becoming a Green Lantern ruined, Stewart Jr receives an unlikely pep talk from his mom, who also tells him that he's going to art school. Remember, his real passion has always been drawing, so to somewhat make up for her terrible parenting, Bernadette applied to a nearby university on his behalf. After being accepted by said university, Stewart Jr moves on from his Green Lantern dream.

Or so he thinks. Again, to keep things short, Stewart Jr is selected for what appears to be a special university project. However, the man he's trying to impress with his art skills is actually a male Guardian who, after Stewart Jr demonstrates his ability to construct his father's watch using a Green Lantern ring, is sent to be interviewed by Lianna.

Why do the Guardians want John Stewart to replace Hal Jordan?

For myriad reasons; but two specific reasons stand out among all others.

First — and perhaps most importantly — the Guardians are concerned about Jordan's relationship with Sinestro. Sure, Jordan was the one who defeated Sinestro after the latter killed one of the Guardians, but they know Jordan still harbors affection for his former mentor.

I wouldn't be shocked if they knew Jordan had visited Sinestro for information about the Manhunters in Lanterns episode 2, either. If they do, they'll be even more worried because there's no telling what Sinestro could do or say to Jordan to win him over to Sinestro's cause.

The other reason is Jordan's reckless nature. During their chat, Lianna tells Stewart that, despite regularly being told not to interfere in terrestrial matters, Jordan continues to do so. Replacing Jordan with Stewart would mean that these impulsive interventions would stop because Stewart wouldn't defy his bosses' wishes.

After successfully passing his Green Lantern interview, all eyes are now on how and when Stewart will succeed Jordan as Earth's primary Green Lantern in the DCU Chapter One TV series. Based on what Jordan tells Stewart at the end of this episode, though, he won't go quietly into that good night. Well, until Lanterns' 2026 storyline, when Jordan is murdered by someone, anyway...

Oh Reacher (Alan Ritchson)... what have you done? A key part of the Prime Video show is when our hero falls for the chosen girl of each season... but in Reacher season 4, that comes at a huge price.

Without giving too much away, let's just say that Reacher's current love interest Lila (Agnez Mo) hasn't been incredibly truthful about who she really is. Considering that a major CIA cover-up is in the process of being debunked, this is far from good news.

The People v Gorilla Grodd is officially in the works at DC Studios.

Initially positioned as a Superman spin-off show tentatively titled DC Crime, the forthcoming crime mockumentary series will star Jimmy Olsen and many other familiar faces from Metropolis-based news outlet The Daily Planet. It'll also feature the live-action debut of Gorilla Grodd, aka one of The Flash's most famous adversaries, in a DC comic book project.

With development on the HBO Max program underway, I suspect you're *ahem* going ape over this announcement and want to know more about it. You've come to the right place, then, because you'll find more information on the DC Universe (DCU) TV show below, including its confirmed cast and plot brief. So, here's what we know so far about The People v Gorilla Grodd (TPvGG).

The People v Gorilla Grodd release window prediction

The People v Gorilla Grodd was only announced in mid-August, so you won't be shocked to read that it doesn't have a firm release date yet.

It might not be long before the cameras begin to roll on the DCU TV series, though. Indeed, while some of its cast members were shooting Man of Tomorrow, aka the sequel to last year's Superman movie, DC Studios co-head and Man of Tomorrow's director James Gunn has confirmed that principal photography has wrapped on that film. It's possible, then, that TPvGG could enter full production before the end of 2026.

If filming starts soon, we could see TPvGG in late 2027. However, with what I'd expect to be a lengthy post-production process, I think it's more likely it'll debut on HBO Max, aka one of the world's best streaming services, in early 2028.

The People v Gorilla Grodd trailer: is there one?

No. If my early 2028 release window prediction is correct, I doubt we'll see one before the end of 2027. Whenever a teaser gets shared online by DC Studios, I'll update this section.

The first four names, all of whom work at The Daily Planet, will be familiar to anyone who's seen 2025's Superman movie. Gisondo had a fairly large supporting role in that film, while Bennett, Hoover, and Pierce only appeared in a couple of scenes.

On the newcomers' front, Tatro (American Vandal) is the only actor whose role has been announced. He'll play Gorilla Grodd, aka the hyperintelligent and telepathic ape this crime-comedy series focuses on.

As for the other six stars, their character identities are being kept under wraps. However, industry insider Apocalyptic Horseman has claimed Moayed (Wonder Man, Ms Marvel) will portray the prosecutor who helped to put Grodd behind bars. Meanwhile, per Apocalyptic Horseman again, Franco (Stranger Things) is playing a close friend of Grodd's.

Could other individuals possibly make an appearance? David Corenswet's Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane, who are also Daily Planet reporters, are surprisingly conspicuous by their absence from the cast list. It'll be interesting to see whether they're added in a cameo or supporting role at a later date. Or, depending on when TPvGG is set in relation to Man of Tomorrow, if they'll have to sit this one out.

Elsewhere, given this series is based around Grodd, it would be surprising if Barry Allen/The Flash didn't show up. That said, Gunn and fellow DCU overseer Peter Safran haven't said if they'll introduce their version of the Scarlett Speedster anytime soon, so he might just be referenced in The People v Gorilla Grodd rather than appear in the flesh.

The People v Gorilla Grodd story synopsis

Here's the official logline for TPvGG: "A super-intelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part 'true' crime docuseries, the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials."

That would've been enough to go on for now. However, DC Studios released an even longer story synopsis as part of the above X/Twitter post.

"The People v. Gorilla Grodd will take a fresh, 360-degree look at the case, revealing the 'lesser-seen side' of the hyper-intelligent ape, according to the film's first-time director Jimmy Olsen," it reads. "Olsen was granted unprecedented, exclusive access to interview Grodd inside Stryker's Island Penitentiary for the documentary.

"Grodd has long claimed his innocence in the murder and brain consumption of his father, King Grodd — a crime he was convicted of in March 2021 and has remained incarcerated for ever since. The series will take an in-depth look at the investigation, featuring brand new reporting from members of the Daily Planet staff, as well as interviews with witnesses and experts on both Grodd's and the Metropolis District Attorney's side of the case, including Grodd's new counsel at the Metropolis Freedom Project."

As for what else we know about TPvGG, it'll be a half-hour comedy comprising eight episodes, and produced by DC Studios in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television.

How will The People v Gorilla Grodd impact the DCU?

Nobody knows. Right now, we can't say where it'll sit on the DCU timeline, whether it'll be a standalone project that doesn't significantly affect DCU Chapter One's overarching narrative, and/or whether putting Grodd front and center will set the stage for The Flash's eventual introduction in this cinematic franchise.

Until Gunn or someone else gives us some firm details on the above, your guess is as good as mine. Hopefully, it won't be too long before more light is shed on TPvGG and its potential impact on the DCU.

• Brazil, Chile, and Mexico are the other countries affected
• Apple One individual plans are increasing in price too

Apple TV, home to Widow's Bay, Severance, Ted Lasso, Silo, Slow Horses, and more, is putting up its subscription prices in the US. Access to the entertainment platform will now set you back $14.99 a month rather than $12.99 a month.

This doesn't come direct from Apple, but rather from Deadline (via The Verge). Apparently, the price rise goes into effect immediately, and subscribers will be told about the bump before their next billing date.

The Apple TV page on the Apple site confirms the price increase. The annual subscription rate is going up too, from $99 to $119, while an individual Apple One subscription now costs $21.95 a month, which is up $2 from $19.95.

This is the fourth Apple TV price hike in four years: as recently as mid-2022, Apple TV cost just $4.99 a month. Prices are reportedly also going up in Brazil, Chile, and Mexico at the same time, but no other regions are affected for now.

More costs for viewers

The last Apple TV price rise in the US was back in August, when the monthly cost was increased from $9.99 to $12.99. Before that it went up $3 in October 2023, and $3 in October 2022, so it's the time of year for Apple TV to get more expensive.

It's also the time of year for new iPhones, with certain iPhone 18 handsets expected to break cover a week on Wednesday, September 9. It will be the first launch event fronted by the new Apple CEO, John Ternus.

Understandably, users aren't too happy about having to pay more for their Apple TV subscription. "Ted Lasso reruns aren't worth it," says one commenter on Reddit, while another says "there isn't enough content on Apple TV to justify this price".

Plenty of users on the same Reddit thread are bemoaning the regular price hikes that we're seeing across most streaming services, and suggesting that subscription hopping or even going back to physical media is the way forward.

We're officially a quarter of the way through Lanterns' first season — and, judging by the sheer volume of discussions I've seen online about it, millions are really enjoying the DC Universe's (DCU) latest TV show.

If you're among that number, you'll want to know when the sci-fi crime drama's next chapter, titled 'OutKast', will hit a streaming platform near you. The Last Sunrise (Prime Video)

Another young adult banger from Prime Video? The streamer is truly the gift that keeps on giving if this is the genre for you. This time, more summer romance comes in the form of The Last Sunrise.

In a nutshell, Ry (Maia Reficco), is a college student with a chronic illness on a summer escape with her mother (Eva Longoria). She unexpectedly falls for Julián (Fernando Lindez) and begins to embrace living in the moment but, as its logline states, "her worsening condition and long-hidden family secrets threaten to unravel everything before the summer ends."

Sounds like tissues will be needed, then. Based on the novel of the same name, I can almost guarantee than watching Amazon's movie adaptation is going to break me. — Jasmine Valentine, entertainment reporter

Dark Matter season 2 (Apple TV)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Apple TV is the undisputed king of small-screen sci-fi fare. Admittedly, Dark Matter isn't one of the streamer's more popular genre offerings, but its mind-melding narrative will scratch the itch of those who aren't completely burned out by the concept of the multiverse.

But, I'm getting off-track. Season 2 of the Apple original series reunites us with the Dessens — Jason (Joel Edgerton) and Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) — as they're forced to go on the run again when a new threat ermerges. Coupled with Jason's growing obsession with the mysterious Box and Daniela's escalating paranoia further impinging on their lives, their relationship will be pushed to the limits are Dark Matter season 2 blends intimate drama with abstract science fiction. — TP

One Hundred Years of Solitude Grand Finale (Netflix)

As Netflix's ambitious attempts to tell Gabriel García Márquez's apparently unfilmable novel is about to reach its conclusion.

Indeed, the finale charts Macondo as it faces its last days and the birth of the final descendant. Even if you've read the original book, you still probably won't have a handle on what's about to unfold. One Hundred Years of Solitude is a tragedy on a legendary level, but there's still something incredibly satisfying about our story coming full circle. — JV

Adults season 2 (Hulu/Disney+)

Adults returns with a two-episode premiere this weekend, so Hulu or Disney+ is the place to be for your sitcom needs.

When we pick up, we'll be navigating the aftermath of that messy season one cliff-hanger. What was meant to be a spontaneous and platonic marriage between Paul Baker (Jack Innanen) and Anton (Owen Thiele) to stop the former's deportation from the US has evolved into something much more.

Unfortunately, this has caused a love triangle because Issa (Amita Rao) is in love with Paul Baker, and Anton happens to be her best friend. I can't see this ending well, can you? — LB

The Undeclared War season 2 (Peacock)

Peacock subscribers, you are in for a treat. UK viewers have already experienced The Undeclared War season 2 on Channel 4 and, frankly, I've never been more invested in a cyber-attack scandal.

The same Malware Department at GCHQ are dealing with the aftermath of a devastating Russian cyberattack. But, just as the UK believes it has regained control, a far more dangerous threat emerges involving Chinese malware — and an internal mole.

You probably already know and love Simon Pegg (and rightly so), but it's Siân Brooke that you need to keep an eye on. Everything she touches, turns to gold. — JV

Tyler Perry's Beauty in Black season 3 (Netflix)

If you're a fan of Beauty in Black, you've no doubt been on the edge of your seat waiting for season 3. After an FBI raid and plenty of legal trouble last season, we all want the tea.

In season 3, we follow Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams) and Mallory (Crystle Stewart) as they navigate their new control of the Bellarie family empire. Meanwhile, older family members are getting interrogated and are beginning to turn on each other as hidden crimes are brought to light.

Beauty in Black will return for season 4 as well, so this Netflix show is here to stay. I'm sure Tyler Perry's got much more drama up his sleeve. — LB

Furious season 2 has been confirmed for Hulu (US) and Disney+ (internationally), and I'm thrilled at the news that the excellent crime series will continue.

Ahead of the season 1 finale on August 31, Furious has been renewed so we can all breathe a sigh of relief that the trail won't go cold. There are so many answers I want in season 2, and I'm not alone in this.

I spoke to Nora Washington's actress about what she hopes to see in season 2, and at the time of our interview, the news hadn't yet been confirmed. So I'm excited to see if any of this comes to light when the show returns.

'I would love to see how she got to where she is'

Nora has quickly become a fan favorite amongst Furious viewers, and it's easy to see why. Bernstine perfectly balances humor with the dark narrative, bringing some funny lines where we never know what she's going to do or say next.

When I asked Bernstine about her hopes for Furious season 2, she had her sights set on Nora's boss Ed George (Danny McCarthy). He's now firmly Nora's enemy after removing her from the case, which could open doors for a very juicy revenge plot for her.

Bernstine told me: "Well, we have to take Ed George down first and foremost. I really need him to go away, so that's my main hope for Nora in season 2."

We also discussed Nora's alcoholism, and how that's an important part of her story. Bernstine admitted this was a challenge, because Nora is a high-functioning alcoholic and we see her trying to get her job done whilst also struggling with this addiction.

She said: "My biggest acting challenge was the alcoholism, because in my experience, it's easier to play like very drunk, you know, like falling down drunk. Nora is a highly functioning alcoholic, and so it was more of a gray area that she occupied because she is a little drunk and she's a little hungover at all times. So figuring out that balance was a challenge for me."

With this in mind, Bernstine told me she would love to learn more about Nora's backstory before we met her in Furious season 1. There's so much about Nora that remains a mystery, which could be explored when the series returns.

"I would also love to see how she got to where she is. I don't know what that looks like, but I'm curious to see what Liz [Meriwether, Furious' showrunner] and the writers might come up with."

Furious season 1 concludes on August 31, so we'll have to wait patiently for news of the show's return. I can't wait to see what happens next.

A man and his sidekicks time travel through an infinite number of universes, arriving to unknown circumstances where futuristic drama inevitably lays in wait. Am I talking about Stuart Fails to Save the Universe on HBO Max, or legendary BBC series Doctor Who?

At face value, they clearly could be one and the same. But while The Big Bang Theory spinoff is just getting started with its debut 10 episodes (though season 2 has already been renewed), Doctor Who has been regenerating for decades since 1963... but is now stuck.

Not only has Russell T Davies — the man responsible for reviving the IP in the early 2000s — officially left, but the series has been put out to tender. This means that the broadcaster (BBC) asks independent production companies to pitch ideas and bid to make the program instead of using their own in-house team or current producer.

In short, absolutely anything could happen to Doctor Who over the next few years, including it being dropped completely. Yes, this is a worst case scenario, but you don't need the Doctor to tell you that nothing is impossible.

As we enter week six of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe airing on the small screen, something the cast told me has birthed a slightly unhinged idea: what if the two shows crossed over in an unexpected act of heroism?

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe and Doctor Who feels like a partnership waiting to happen — and it could help the BBC

"We're like four inept Doctor Who's," Lauren Lapkus (Denise) tells me. "The whole show has very heavy Doctor Who vibes." And you know what? She's right.

Let's start with the obvious. Doctor Who is actively looking for new production companies to pitch fresh ideas. Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is the new kid on the sci-fi block, armed with some of the best sitcom creators in the world and an overarching idea that could last for seasons upon seasons.

From those facts alone, it sounds like a conversation between HBO and BBC needs to happen. Add to this that the two distributors have worked together before — on Half Man, Industry and His Dark Materials, just to name a few — and we only have more solid reasoning.

Doctor Who has even been 'Americanised' before now thanks to the BBC's previous partnership on the show with Disney+. Was this the right fit? No, but audiences have certainly got a taste of what the Doctor can be.

Don't forget, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is also steeped in classic sci-fi lore thanks to The Big Bang Theory. Take a look at how many references there were below and you'll realize both characters and creators had an inside-out understanding of the genre its built from.

So watching our new Doctor, whoever that ends up being, collide with Stuart and the gang doesn't seem too far-fetched to me. Even an alternate version of Stuart being the Doctor himself is something that I wouldn't question. Doctor Who obviously isn't a sitcom, but it's always been funny... so all of this should be enough to Chuck Lorre to come knocking.

Realistically, I think a singular crossover episodes is as much as we'd ever get here, but I'm daring to dream — mostly because as a Brit, I don't want to see Doctor Who have a neglected, unfitting end completely out of its own control.

Chuck Lorre might be considered to be the 'King of Sitcoms', but that doesn't mean all of his creations are well received. While Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, and Young Sheldon were all incredibly well-received, TBBT spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is proving to be a little more divisive.

Following awkward comic book store owner Stuart (Kevin Sussman) instead of the core TBBT cast, the new HBO Max show has been simultaneously branded as better than the main series and as "AI slop" (following online controversy surrounding its title sequence).

Is there an objective truth to a TV show being good? Probably not — but if people are intent on hating Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, then it's time to move our attention to another Chuck Lorre comedy that continues to fly under the radar.

If you miss the traditional multicam sitcom format, or are really enjoying its usage in the Young Sheldon spinoff Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, Leanne on Netflix is your next port of call... and season 2 is streaming now.

Leanne season 2 is now on Netflix — and this time, I hope more viewers appreciate it

When we first met her in season 1, Leanne (a fictional version of comedian Leanne Morgan) had her life turned upside down when her husband of 33 years unexpectedly left her for another woman. Fast-forward a year, and she's dealing with a milestone birthday, moving her parents into her home, and continuing to try out the world of modern dating.

Does this sound like something my mother would watch rather than me? On paper, yes — but there's something so overwhelmingly endearing about Leanne and its concept that I cannot help but be glued to my TV screen, rooting for her.

That starts with how intoxicating Morgan is herself. Her Southern accent is as thick as honey, and you'll be hard-pressed to believe that she's not putting it on (trust me, she's not). Her humor is the kind that speaks before she thinks, and that naturalistic tone only makes us want to be her best friend.

Then there's the fact that we're watching a woman in her sixties succeed on the world's biggest streaming service. Netflix has revealed the first details of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 extended look, including runtime, and confirmed all footage shown will be captured on the base PlayStation 5.

The much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look is scheduled to premiere later today on Netflix at at 3pm ET / 8pm BST / August 28 at 5am AEST, giving fans a deeper look at the most anticipated game of all time.

There's been much speculation leading up to the event about what the extended look will offer, with many fans hoping for the long-awaited look at gameplay and possibly Trailer 3.

Now, Netflix has revealed additional details just hours ahead of the event, confirming that everything showcased will be captured on the base PS5.

"The new iteration in the blockbuster series comes 13 years following the debut of Grand Theft Auto V, the same year that Netflix was beginning its push into original programming," the Netflix Tudum post reads.

"Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, this extended look at the next Grand Theft Auto showcases the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet."

What's more, it seems the runtime for the GTA 6 extended look will be 26 minutes, according to The Verge journalist Tom Warren, who shared a screenshot of the updated mobile page on X.

That's much shorter than I expected, but it's still long enough to offer a good amount of gameplay footage for fans to obsess over ahead of the game's launch on November 19.

If you're unable to watch the GTA 6 extended look as it premieres on Netflix, don't worry, because it will be available for free six hours later on YouTube at 9pm ET on August 27 / 2am BST / 11am AEST on August 28.

"Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto 6 is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first," Brandon Riegg, VP of Nonfiction Series, said in the Tudum post.

"It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience."

Armchair detectives, assume the position: Only Murders in the Building season 6 will arrive on Hulu (US) and Disney+ (international) on December 8.

We don't yet know the full schedule on which episodes will be released — my best guess is a three-episode premiere followed by weekly releases — but we do have some first-look images, alongside confirmation of what the new season's plot is going to focus on.

As the official synopsis explains: "After successfully bringing the guilty to justice once again, Charles, Oliver and Mabel embark on their hardest case yet when the next victim — Cinda Canning — arrives at their doorstep, summoning them to London to catch her killer.

"Our beloved trio of true crime-solving podcasters must now navigate their way through the home of the cozy murder mystery, replete with a whole new collection of suspicious and particularly English-eccentric characters. But can they follow in the footsteps of the woman whose podcast started it all for them… without having their story end the same as hers?"

With a roster of upcoming guest stars ranging from Olivia Colman to Nicola Coughlan, season 6 could easily be the jewel in the Only Murders in the Building crown. However, there's one new change that suggests that the show is starting to run out of ideas: the new season is, in fact, called Only Murders in London.

Remember how Emily in Paris season 5 was changed to Emily in Rome during its marketing campaign because... well, Emily (Lily Collins) spent the first half living in Rome?

At the time, this annoyed me a lot. Not only did Netflix's decision to suddenly revert to the Emily in Paris title halfway through season 5 irk me, but the act of relying on a gimmick to get people watching in the first place sent alarm bells ringing.

Clearly, this is an IP that Netflix wanted to drag on for a long as possible because it's successful and highly-watched — but realistically ran out of steam around the season 3 mark. Sure enough, the streamer announced that season 6 would be its last shortly after Emily in Rome aired.

This is all to say that Only Murders in the Building season 6 changing its name to Only Murders in London gives off exactly the same energy. Of course the series had to relocate in order to be sustained (how many people can actually die in one building before it's shut down?), but this in itself is telling.

Should season 6 of Only Murders in the Building actually exist? As much as I hate to admit it, probably not. Crime dramas can work when they suddenly choose to cross the pond — just look at Murder, She Wrote — but again, it's a signal that desperation for storyline ideas has kicked in.

I think that the name change is designed to distract us from this, though it will actually have the opposite effect. I know I'm going to enjoy Only Murders in the Building being in my hometown immensely... but don't be surprised if it's announced that season 7 will be the last.

Furious is a must-watch new crime series that's streaming on Hulu (US) and Disney+ (internationally), and it's female-led story is a huge part of why I love it.

The series, created by Elizabeth Meriwether, centers around FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) on the hunt for a calculating female serial killer, Catherine Grace (Lola Petticrew). As their lives intertwine, we meet a lot of other important names, including Nora Washington (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), who is the head of the FBI's sex crimes unit.

I spoke to Bernstine about what drew her to the series, and she said: "Liz Meriwether drew me to the series because she's an absolute genius and I wanted to work with her. It's funny, I was in the middle of watching Dying for Sex [another Hulu series by Meriwether] when I got the interview and the audition request, and so of course I jumped at that!.

"I was sent a few scenes and the pilot episode. And I was blown away by the material," Bernstine added. "I had just never seen characters like this before. I was so interested in the idea of a female serial killer, because that's obviously a very rare thing."

Female characters are at the center of Furious' narrative, on both sides of the law, and I noted that their stories were told through a sympathetic lens which can often make us feel uncomfortable.

Each character felt well-rounded, and we got to experience things from their perspective, especially when it's a point of view that exists to challenge us and make us think. These psychological deep dives into flawed characters are just one part of why Furious is such a great piece of TV.

'I'm watching the show rooting for the serial killer, and I can't believe it'

Bernstine added: "I was just talking to someone this morning who's like, 'I'm watching the show rooting for the serial killer, and I can't believe it.' And I'm having the same experience, you know, it's funny because I know the show. I've seen the show, many times, but I'm watching it each week with like fresh eyes.

"I feel like I'm watching it with the world. With my husband, with my mother, with my brother, and everyone is like, 'I cannot believe I'm rooting for these people'.

"But that's the genius of Liz Meriwether, it's so surprising. Because it's very uncomfortable, but at the same time, you can understand what all of these women are going through."

Nora Washington is an interesting character because, despite the serious nature of her job at the FBI, she is also a very funny character. Much of the comic relief comes from Nora, something that I'm a huge fan of.

Speaking about her characterization, Bernstine told me: "She is down in this dark basement with no air, no light, like going into this room to watch this awful material, so that she can try to catch the bad guys, as it were".

She concluded: "And yet she has some of the funniest lines in the whole show. You never know what's going to come out of her mouth, but 9 times out of 10, it's gonna make you laugh."

I'm so impressed by Furious and highly encourage people to seek it out if they're looking for a unique crime series to binge on the best streaming services.
